Spider-Man: Brand New Day simply refuses to give up the top spot.
The Marvel blockbuster remained No. 1 at the domestic box office for a fifth consecutive weekend, collecting an estimated $22.2 million from 3,678 theaters. That pushes the film to approximately $891.5 million domestically, putting the $900 million milestone within reach. Meanwhile, the movie Hollywood once planned to never release finally reached theaters — and audiences showed up.
Coyote vs. Acme opened in second place with $15.5 million, providing an encouraging theatrical debut for the long-delayed Looney Tunes movie.
Coyote Vs. Acme Finally Gets Its Moment
The road to theaters for Coyote vs. Acme has arguably been more dramatic than anything happening on screen.
Warner Bros. controversially shelved the completed film in 2023 as part of a tax write-off strategy, triggering widespread criticism from filmmakers and movie fans. Ketchup Entertainment eventually acquired the movie and brought it to theaters this weekend.
The result was an estimated $15.47 million opening from 3,575 theaters, good enough for second place.
That isn’t blockbuster territory, but for a movie that once appeared destined to never be seen at all, it’s an impressive ending to one of Hollywood’s strangest release sagas.
And the movie itself was worth the fight to save it. In our Coyote vs. Acme review, we praised the film for embracing the anarchic spirit of the classic Looney Tunes while finding a surprisingly effective story about failure and persistence.
The live-action/animated comedy stars Will Forte, John Cena and Lana Condor and is directed by Dave Green.
The Odyssey Keeps Sailing
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continues to demonstrate extraordinary staying power.
The epic collected another $14.3 million from 2,617 theaters this weekend, bringing its domestic total to approximately $563.8 million.
The continued audience interest isn’t especially surprising given the film’s reception. Our The Odyssey review called Christopher Nolan’s adaptation an epic masterpiece and one of the director’s most ambitious achievements.
That’s especially impressive considering the film has now been playing for more than six weeks.
Nolan’s adaptation stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside an enormous ensemble that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.
Insidious Holds Onto Fourth Place
Insidious: Out of the Further followed its strong opening weekend with another $10.1 million, bringing the horror sequel’s domestic total to approximately $43.6 million.
The film debuted with $25.3 million last weekend and has helped keep horror well represented near the top of the late-summer box office.
The Dog Stars Struggles With $8 Million Opening
The weekend’s biggest disappointment belongs to Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars.
The post-apocalyptic thriller opened with just $8 million from 3,330 theaters, placing fifth.
Based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, the movie stars Jacob Elordi as Hig, a survivor living at an abandoned Colorado airfield following a devastating pandemic. Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong and Allison Janney also star.
It’s a particularly soft opening considering Scott’s pedigree and the film’s wide theatrical launch.
The disappointing debut also arrives alongside a mixed critical response. Our The Dog Stars review found plenty to admire in Ridley Scott’s beautiful, contemplative apocalypse, but concluded that the film ultimately struggles to find a pulse.
