Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on the verge of another historic box-office milestone.
According to TheWrap, The Sony and Marvel Studios blockbuster has now passed $2.33 billion worldwide after its fifth weekend in theaters, putting it within striking distance of Avatar: The Way of Water and the No. 3 spot on the all-time worldwide box-office chart.
Tom Holland’s latest outing as Peter Parker added approximately $22.2 million domestically over the August 28–30 weekend, enough to keep Brand New Day at No. 1 in North America for a fifth consecutive weekend. Its domestic total now stands at roughly $891.5 million.
The movie’s remarkable run has already carried it past several of the biggest films ever released.
Spider-Man Has Already Passed Titanic And Ne Zha 2
Only a week ago, Brand New Day stood at $2.22 billion worldwide and ranked sixth all-time, behind Titanic, Ne Zha 2 and Avatar: The Way of Water.
It has now cleared both Titanic and Ne Zha 2, leaving James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water as its next target.
The current worldwide leaders, before final weekend grosses settle the Spider-Man/Avatar 2 order, are:
- Avatar — approximately $2.92 billion
- Avengers: Endgame — approximately $2.80 billion
- Avatar: The Way of Water — approximately $2.33 billion
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day — more than $2.33 billion
Because the two films are now separated by such a narrow margin — and Sunday’s Brand New Day figures are estimates — the No. 3 position could officially change hands as updated international grosses arrive. The Way of Water finished at approximately $2.334 billion worldwide.
Brand New Day Continues Its Record-Breaking Run
The worldwide milestone is only the latest record for Brand New Day.
The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film became just the eighth movie ever to cross $2 billion worldwide, reaching the mark during its third weekend in theaters. It was also the second-fastest movie ever to reach $2 billion, behind only Avengers: Endgame.
It has long since become the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie, surpassing the $1.9 billion worldwide run of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The film is now approaching another extraordinary benchmark domestically. With approximately $891.5 million in North America, Brand New Day is less than $50 million away from the unadjusted domestic record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which finished with $936.7 million.
The question is no longer whether Brand New Day will rank among the biggest movies ever released. It’s how high Spider-Man can ultimately climb.
