Ryan Coogler Returning for Black Panther 3 as Marvel Reveals New Black Panther

Wakanda’s future is officially taking shape.

During Marvel Studios’ blockbuster Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, filmmaker Ryan Coogler confirmed he will return to direct Black Panther 3, which is set to arrive exclusively in theaters on December 15, 2028.

The biggest surprise, however, came when Coogler introduced David Jonsson (Alien: RomulusThe Long Walk) as the franchise’s new Black Panther, confirming the next chapter will focus on T’Challa’s son.

A New Black Panther Rises

Joined on stage by Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Winston Duke (M’Baku), Coogler reflected on the emotional journey that began in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever before revealing where the story is headed next.

“The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T’Challa,” Coogler told the Hall H crowd. “In this next film, he grows up… he comes of age.”

That confirmation means the young Prince Toussaint—introduced at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—will officially step into the mantle of Black Panther.

David Jonsson Joins the MCU

After being introduced by Coogler, David Jonsson received a standing ovation from the Hall H audience before expressing his gratitude for joining one of Marvel’s most beloved franchises.

“I want to say thank you so much. Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin, thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join.”

Jonsson added that he wanted to keep details under wraps, saying he preferred to “let the screen do the talking.”

The casting marks another major milestone for the rising actor, who has continued building momentum following standout performances in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk.

Ryan Coogler Returns to Wakanda

Coogler has been the creative force behind Marvel’s Wakanda saga since directing Black Panther in 2018 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022.

In addition to the films, he also helped expand the franchise through Disney+ projects including Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda.

His return ensures continuity as Marvel begins a new era centered on Wakanda’s next generation.

The Legacy Continues

Rather than replacing T’Challa’s legacy, Black Panther 3 appears poised to honor it by following his son as he comes of age and embraces the responsibility of becoming Wakanda’s newest protector.

With Ryan Coogler once again behind the camera and David Jonsson stepping into one of the MCU’s most iconic roles, Black Panther 3 is already shaping up to be one of Marvel Studios’ biggest events when it arrives in theaters on December 15, 2028.
