The Ex-Presidents are coming back.
AMC Global Media has officially greenlit a new Point Break television series for AMC and AMC+, bringing the world of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 action classic back more than three decades later.
The first season will consist of eight episodes and is scheduled to begin production in early 2027.
Rather than remaking the original story, the new Point Break will take place in the present day and follow a new heist crew with connections to the notorious Ex-Presidents gang.
When the crew emerges, the FBI is forced to turn to a mysterious former professional surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate the group.
That should sound very familiar to anyone who remembers Johnny Utah and Bodhi.
Point Break Returns More Than 30 Years Later
The original Point Break, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, the charismatic leader of a group of surfers who rob banks while wearing masks of former U.S. presidents.
Lori Petty and Gary Busey also starred in the 1991 film, which went on to become an enduring action favorite.
AMC’s new series isn’t simply retelling that story with new actors.
Instead, it will exist decades after the events of the original movie, allowing the new Ex-Presidents and their FBI pursuers to operate within the same world.
That connection gives the series room to honor the original without requiring another direct remake.
A separate Point Break remake starring Édgar Ramírez and Luke Bracey was released in 2015.
Who Is Making the Point Break TV Series?
Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers.
Kalstein’s credits include Treadstone, Quantico and NCIS: Los Angeles, while Rogers previously worked on Halt and Catch Fire and Sugar.
AMC Global Media chief content officer and AMC Studios president Dan McDermott said the creative team has developed characters and a story designed to honor the movie while introducing a new generation of Ex-Presidents.
Kalstein and Rogers, meanwhile, described the original film as a story about friendship, outlaws and spirituality that had a lasting impact on both of them.
Alcon Television Group is serving as the lead studio, with AMC Studios and STUDIOCANAL co-producing.
Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will executive produce alongside Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen.
Point Break Will Have a Global Reach
The new series is also being developed as an international project from the beginning.
CANAL+ commissioned Point Break for its footprint covering more than 50 countries across France, Europe, Africa and Asia.
STUDIOCANAL will handle international sales and worldwide distribution outside the United States and Canada.
In the U.S., the series is being produced for AMC and AMC+.
Casting has not yet been announced, leaving one particularly interesting question unanswered: who will become the faces of this new generation of surfers, criminals and federal agents?
There’s also plenty of room for speculation about how closely the series will connect itself to the characters and events of the 1991 film.
For now, AMC is only promising a story set decades later with direct ties to the Ex-Presidents.
When Will the Point Break TV Series Premiere?
AMC has not announced a premiere date for Point Break.
The eight-episode first season is scheduled to begin production in early 2027, making a 2027 premiere possible, although AMC has not yet confirmed a specific release window.
The series will air on AMC and AMC+ in the United States, with CANAL+ carrying the project across its international footprint.
More casting, production and premiere-date announcements are expected as the new Point Break moves toward production.
