Discovery Makes History By Finding 2,500-Year-Old High Priest Mummy Live On Television

On Sunday, April 7, Discovery viewers from 95 countries around the world witnessed history in the making in EXPEDITION UNKNOWN: EGYPT LIVE as a team of Egyptian archaeologists and explorers uncovered a 2,500-year-old mummy of a high priest for the first time ever on live television. But that was not the only stunning find. In addition to the high priest mummy, two other mummies were revealed along with a treasure trove of antiquities, including a mysterious wax head.

“This is Discovery at its best – transporting fans into new worlds through awe-inspiring stories and immersive experiences. It doesn’t get much more immersive than this,” said Nancy Daniels, chief brand officer, Discovery & Factual.

This real-life Indiana Jones adventure, which was also simulcast on Travel Channel and Science Channel, gave viewers a rare opportunity to join an actual archeological excavation in real time – exploring a labyrinth of underground tombs and witnessing the inner chambers of the remote burial site known as Al-Ghorifa in Middle Egypt, located approximately 165 miles south of Cairo.

Adventurer and avid explorer Josh Gates and world-renowned Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass, whose legendary career spans nearly 50 years, explored the deep tunnels underground; while TV personality Chris Jacobs and Dr. Mostafa Waziri, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, provided on-the-ground commentary.

“This has been such an amazing experience,” said Gates, following the live global broadcast. “There aren’t many people who can say they’ve gone down into unexplored ancient tombs – especially with a living legend like Dr. Hawass. We were able to document spectacular artifacts and mummies and bring viewers along in real time. It was the thrill of a lifetime.”

“Never in my 50 years in archaeology have I experienced something on such a grand scale as this,” Dr. Hawass said. “The findings here are completely special and totally unique. This is what keeps me going. It is what keeps me feeling young and alive!”

This ancient Egyptian necropolis has long remained a mystery until now. In 1927, an antiquities inspector first discovered the sarcophagus of a high priest in this area. However, the sarcophagus was robbed and the mummy was missing. In this historic moment, Discovery cameras were rolling live at the dig site as the mummy of a powerful high priest was revealed.

During the live broadcast, viewers also had the thrill of coming face to face with two other mummies that appear to be directly connected – the first of which was a female mummy based on the artifacts discovered in a cut above ground.

The second mummy was discovered inside the “Family Tomb,” the final resting place of an entire family from 2,500 years ago. The Family Tomb also included such unique objects as an ancient Egyptian board game, the remains of a family dog and four intact canopic jars used to store a mummy’s organs. While the second mummy was not a high priest or fully preserved, the objects inside the tomb and inscriptions on his sarcophagus reveal that he was a singer in the temple of an Egyptian god known as Thoth.

Besides finding the mummies at the site, Dr. Hawass revealed to Josh Gates for the very first time a mysterious wax head that they believe is the mold of “Irt Hrw,” one of the high priests. This extraordinary wax head is the exact cast of a 2,500-year-old high priest mummy – with such detailed features that he could have easily been picked out on the street from it. This moment lead to the stunning finale of the broadcast with the opening of a sealed sarcophagus, which contained an exquisitely preserved 2,500-year-old high priest, a “Great of the Five Priest of Thoth,” covered from top to bottom with gold banding and other artifacts.

“I could never have ever imagined what a unique journey this has been. We’ve been the first to see these amazing ancient treasures. But maybe the most impressive thing of all is how much there is left to explore. I am very happy that the program was seen by millions of people from around the world. We are sending an important message that Egypt is safe and we invite tourists to come,” said Dr. Waziri, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt.

The epic event was produced by Big Dreams Entertainment with Leslie Greif as executive producer, Discovery Studios and Ping Pong Productions.

“Nineteen years ago, we opened the Valley of the Golden Mummies live on television. And now, almost 20 years later, Dr. Hawass called with another discovery of that magnitude that deserved another live broadcast. We’re thrilled to be part of these two epic events here in Egypt,” said Executive Producer Leslie Greif.

EXCLUSIVE : GOLD RUSH Season Premiere Sneak Peek Clip

GOLD RUSH Season 7 Episode 2 Sneak Peek Clip

It’s a new beginning for GOLD RUSH – new miners, new rivalries and brand-new claims. This season, the miners will stop at nothing as they risk it all in pursuit of the American Dream. But who will come out on top? Discovery’s #1-rated show GOLD RUSH returns for its ninth season on Friday, October 12 at 9 PM ET/PT.

This year, Rick Ness has decided to step it up and become a mine boss with a claim of his own. He’s seen it all – and put in the grunt work – after working six years under fellow miner Parker Schnabel. Rick cashes in his life savings and literally puts everything on the line. But is he ready? In the off-season, Rick spent most of his time nursing his mother until she passed away. As a result, he’s far behind the others as they race into the mining season. But that isn’t his only uphill battle. Rick has recruited a crew of his Wisconsin buddies, who leave behind their jobs, families and homes, to take a chance on of striking it rich. But only time will tell if his dad’s prediction will come true that “he’ll come home broke with no friends.” The stakes don’t come much higher this year for Rick.

While gold miner and rival Todd Hoffman is out, things aren’t any easier for 23-year-old Parker Schnabel. As the new season kicks off, Parker finds himself in a land war with legendary Klondike miner Tony Beets. Parker’s initial plan was to return to Tony’s ground – the richest he’s ever mined – and deliver more than 6,000 ounces of gold worth $7.2 million dollars. But things go south when he tries to negotiate a royalty rate and must move to another claim. The plan doesn’t sit well for Tony – who could lose millions – and he’s determined to teach young Parker a lesson. It’s a tough start for Parker – especially without having Rick or his long-term girlfriend Ashley by his side.

Meanwhile, legendary Klondike miner Tony Beets has a masterplan this year – to get the two ancient dredges mining and turning around some major profit. And he’s determined that nobody, especially Parker, will get in his way. Tony’s also looking ahead at his kids’ future and is doubling down on everything this year including dredges, barges and gold. He’s also not afraid of a good challenge – and has vowed to match Parker’s lofty $72 million season goal. And if one thing is certain – he’ll run as many wash plants as it takes to ensure he beats his young rival.

Also returning this year is the GOLD RUSH pre-show The Dirt, a series of one-hour shows, beginning 8 PM ET/PT on Friday, October 12. The Dirt will give the inside scoop on everything that went down this year. Fans will be given the opportunity to interact with the miners and get access to behind-the-scenes, cutting room floor material that never makes it into the show.

This year’s GOLD RUSH will be unlike anything seen before. Each week, the gold total will be tallied, pushing the miners to their limits to prove who is ultimately on top. And for viewers who want to catch up on prior seasons, GOLD RUSH is available to binge on Discovery GO, the network’s live and on demand TV Everywhere streaming service, and through TV providers – free with their subscription.

GOLD RUSH is produced for Discovery Channel by Raw Television, where Dimitri Doganis, James Bates and Mike Gamson are executive producers and Justin Kelly is co-executive producer. For Discovery Channel, Matthew Vafiadis is executive producer and Greg Wolf is coordinating producer.

EXCLUSIVE : COOPER’S TREASURE Barrel Hoop City Sneak Peek Clip

36000 ep202 023

Darrell Miklos, treasure hunter by trade and by birth, sets out once again to unearth sunken riches in an all-new season of COOPER’S TREASURE. Armed with a treasure map created from space over 50 years ago by NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper, Darrell sets out to the blue waters of the Bahamas to track down the whereabouts of 11 wreck sites potentially worth billions, loaded with silver, gold and other priceless treasures.

Barrel Hoop City | Cooper’s Treasure Friday, June 29 at 9pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel.  Darrell finds a swarm of barrel hoops (formerly attached to barrels on ships) that indicate they are hot on the trail of a shipwreck.

Considered one of NASA’s original space pioneers, Gordon “Gordo” Cooper gathered troves of information while orbiting the planet in the 1960s. Among his findings were more than 100 anomalies in the Caribbean, which he secretly transcribed onto a map that he believed could reveal vast amounts of treasure. Before his passing, Gordon shared his secret with long-time friend Darrell Miklos, in the hopes that Miklos would be able to continue his work – and recover the many treasures he identified.

Last season, Miklos located a shipwreck possibly tied to Christopher Columbus using Cooper’s intel. But within hours of finding the wreckage, a rival treasure hunter made a competing claim and the government shut down the hunt, tying up Miklos’s search for years.

After discovering photos of the Bahamas in Gordon’s files and a list of eleven wreck sites that Gordon himself tracked, Darrell sets sail with new clues, high tech gear, and a team of experts, including shipwreck recovery specialist Eric Schmitt, marine archeologist Jim Sinclair, and survey expert Mike Perna, to finish the hunt Gordon started decades ago. The expedition leads to incredible finds including gold coins, gold ore, and dozens of priceless artifacts from a multitude of historic wrecks – potentially the richest and most historic discoveries of Darrell’s career.

Viewers can catch up on past seasons of COOPER’S TREASURE on the Discovery GO app.

To Hail and Back: Freezing rainstorms torture the remaining survivalists, risking severe hypothermia, and a successful hunt ends up backfiring and could cost two survivalists the challenge.

After three seasons and three treacherous locations, thirteen Naked and Afraid veterans take on the most harrowing survival challenge yet in an all-new season of Discovery’s NAKED AND AFRAID XL. For 40 days and 40 nights, survivalists put their lives on the line in Africa’s deadly Selati River Basin, a region devastated by drought and teeming with starving predators. Elsewhere in the African Bush, another former survivalist sets off on his own impossible quest for redemption. But in this survival challenge that is biblical in scale, can any of the survivalists make it to the end? NAKED AND AFRAID XL premieres Sunday, May 6 at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel.

Deep in the heart of Africa, ongoing drought has stripped the lush region of resources, creating a fierce competition among the country’s deadliest predators. Dropped into the savannah in four groups of three, the survivalists must master the environment and face their deepest fears. But the trial tests more than just personal endurance – survivalists will have to decide if they are stronger together or if they will break into smaller groups to succeed. Will teams embrace their varied skills and personalities as a tool for survival, or will their differences divide them?

Beginning Sunday, April 1, viewers can visit the Discovery GO app to meet the new teams. Every day through April 5, teams of three will be announced along with their previous NAKED AND AFRAID episodes. The announcements culminate with the thirteenth cast member and first-ever solo survivalist, who will start off isolated from the group and attempt to track the others and complete the challenge together.
