Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1, “Circle of Life,” wastes little time making its new threat personal. Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 Recap

“Circle of Life” opens by reintroducing Struan Loy, the disgraced former Slow Horse who has found an unusual new career after leaving MI5. Struan is attempting to turn shipping containers into compact living spaces and is living in one himself when two apparent prospective customers arrive.

The visit quickly turns deadly. The pair attack Struan, start a fire inside the container and lock him inside, leaving him to burn to death. What initially looks like a tragic accident is anything but.

Emma Flyte becomes aware of Struan’s death, but Diana Taverner is strangely uninterested in involving Jackson Lamb. Protocol would normally require Lamb to be informed when a former member of Slough House dies, yet Taverner tells Flyte not to bother him.

Flyte doesn’t listen. She tracks Lamb down and gives him Struan’s file. Lamb responds with his usual display of indifference, but his actions tell a different story. He keeps the file and tells Roddy to start checking on other former Slow Horses.

That distinction matters. Lamb may insult, humiliate and terrorize the people unfortunate enough to work for him, but Slow Horses has repeatedly shown that he considers them his people. The episode gets some characteristic comedy out of the confusion, including the arrival of an unfamiliar man at Slough House who is treated like a potential threat before turning out to be an estate agent. But his presence becomes more troubling once the team realizes the building itself may no longer officially belong to them.

Catherine Standish goes to the Park looking for answers and gets Moira to investigate. What she learns eliminates the possibility of a simple computer error. Slough House’s disappearance was apparently ordered from high inside MI5.

Lamb eventually confronts Taverner, who continues to behave as though the situation is an administrative mistake. Lamb clearly isn’t convinced, and neither should we be. River therefore has to deliver a eulogy that honors the man he knew while maintaining the fiction surrounding David’s professional life.

It’s an appropriately restrained emotional thread for Slow Horses. River’s relationship with his grandfather has been complicated from the beginning, particularly as David’s declining health exposed painful pieces of the Cartwright family’s history. There is grief here, but there is also the weight of everything River inherited from him.

And then River’s other inheritance arrives.

Why Is Frank Harkness at David Cartwright’s Funeral?

Hugo Weaving’s return immediately changes the temperature of the episode. Frank claims his reasons for attending are sentimental, but River has more than enough experience with his father to know that accepting anything Frank says at face value would be a mistake.

The confrontation becomes even more personal when Frank brings up River’s absent mother. River refuses to simply let him disappear and ultimately tries to stop Frank from leaving, even jumping onto his car, but Frank manages to shake him off and escape.

The premiere doesn’t reveal exactly why Frank has resurfaced now. His appearance at David’s funeral could be exactly what he claims, but the timing is impossible to ignore. “Circle of Life” is an excellent example of how efficiently Slow Horses can start a season. There isn’t a giant action sequence or an elaborate mission briefing. Instead, the premiere introduces several apparently separate problems and lets the unease come from realizing they probably aren’t separate at all.

Struan’s murder provides the immediate mystery. The disappearance of Slough House from MI5’s systems gives it institutional stakes. David’s funeral makes the hour deeply personal for River, and Frank’s return connects that grief to one of the most dangerous pieces of his past.

Gary Oldman remains particularly effective when Lamb’s concern has to be found underneath his behavior rather than expressed directly. His reaction to Struan’s death is quintessential Lamb: act as though he couldn’t care less, quietly take the file, and immediately start checking whether anyone else is in danger.

Jack Lowden gets the premiere’s more openly emotional material. River is trying to properly mourn the man who raised him while still protecting the secrets that defined David’s life. Putting Frank back in front of him on the same day is almost cruel, but dramatically it works beautifully.

The Slough House erasure may ultimately be the premiere’s most intriguing idea. The team has always occupied an uncomfortable space inside MI5 — useful when needed and disposable when convenient.
