Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 Recap
“Circle of Life” opens by reintroducing Struan Loy, the disgraced former Slow Horse who has found an unusual new career after leaving MI5. Struan is attempting to turn shipping containers into compact living spaces and is living in one himself when two apparent prospective customers arrive.
The visit quickly turns deadly. The pair attack Struan, start a fire inside the container and lock him inside, leaving him to burn to death. What initially looks like a tragic accident is anything but.
Emma Flyte becomes aware of Struan’s death, but Diana Taverner is strangely uninterested in involving Jackson Lamb. Protocol would normally require Lamb to be informed when a former member of Slough House dies, yet Taverner tells Flyte not to bother him.
Flyte doesn’t listen. She tracks Lamb down and gives him Struan’s file. Lamb responds with his usual display of indifference, but his actions tell a different story. He keeps the file and tells Roddy to start checking on other former Slow Horses.
That distinction matters. Lamb may insult, humiliate and terrorize the people unfortunate enough to work for him, but Slow Horses has repeatedly shown that he considers them his people. Struan may have left Slough House years ago, but Lamb isn’t willing to dismiss his death simply because Taverner tells him to.
Why Has Slough House Disappeared From MI5?
Missing wages lead Roddy Ho to discover that Slough House and its agents have disappeared from MI5’s database. Catherine Standish asks Moira to investigate and learns that the deletion was deliberate, with the instruction coming from the top.
That makes Taverner an obvious person to question, but her reaction when Lamb confronts her suggests genuine surprise before she offers an explanation. The premiere leaves room to doubt how much she knows.
The erasure turns the team’s precarious position into something tangible. Lamb’s agents have always been treated as disposable; now they lack even the administrative protection of belonging to the service.
What Is Peter Judd Hiding From Taverner?
Peter Judd’s access to the Park exposes another problem for Taverner. Wealthy visitors are being entertained inside the intelligence service, and Judd subsequently reveals that the money she accepted did not actually belong to him. An unidentified third party supplied it.
The disclosure raises questions about who now holds influence over MI5. It does not establish a connection to the murders, but it makes Taverner’s authority look less secure than her promotion suggests.
At David’s funeral, her argument with Lamb also brings his killing of Charles Partner into the open in front of Catherine Standish. The confrontation reaches beyond institutional maneuvering into Catherine’s painful personal history.
River Says Goodbye to David Cartwright
David Cartwright dies peacefully off-screen at 83. Jonathan Pryce returns in a bedside flashback, giving River—and viewers—a final moment with the man who raised him. River later wears his grandfather’s suit to the funeral.
The ceremony preserves David’s Department of Transport cover story. Even River’s farewell must accommodate the secrecy surrounding his grandfather’s work.
Jack Lowden gives that restraint emotional weight. River must mourn a deeply complicated man while finding something honest to say within an official fiction. The loss leaves him especially exposed when another part of his family history returns.
Why Is Frank Harkness at David Cartwright’s Funeral?
Frank Harkness appears outside the funeral, drawing River into a confrontation. His claim of paying his respects comes with a more troubling disclosure: he is in town on business.
The episode leaves that business unexplained. Connecting it directly to the attacks on former Slow Horses would be premature.
Frank strikes River in the throat and heads for his car. River jumps onto the bonnet, but Frank brakes sharply, throws him off and escapes.
Hugo Weaving’s composure makes the encounter particularly cruel. River is grieving and desperate for answers; Frank controls the exchange and leaves him with neither reassurance nor an explanation.
Another Former Slow Horse Is Murdered
Lamb takes River to inspect Struan’s burned shipping container, where they recognize signs that his death was no accident.
The same killers subsequently attack former Slow Horse Kay White beside her boat, knock her into the water and hold her under until she drowns. They then select River Cartwright as another target.
Their methods differ, but the shared Slough House connection gives the deaths a disturbing coherence. The danger now extends from former agents to someone still working for Lamb.
Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 Review
“Circle of Life” is an excellent example of how efficiently Slow Horses can start a season. There isn’t a giant action sequence or an elaborate mission briefing. Instead, the premiere introduces several apparently separate problems and lets the unease come from realizing they probably aren’t separate at all.
Struan’s murder provides the immediate mystery. The disappearance of Slough House from MI5’s systems gives it institutional stakes. David’s funeral makes the hour deeply personal for River, and Frank’s return connects that grief to one of the most dangerous pieces of his past.
Gary Oldman remains particularly effective when Lamb’s concern has to be found underneath his behavior rather than expressed directly. His reaction to Struan’s death is quintessential Lamb: act as though he couldn’t care less, quietly take the file, and immediately start checking whether anyone else is in danger.
Jack Lowden gets the premiere’s more openly emotional material. River is trying to properly mourn the man who raised him while still protecting the secrets that defined David’s life. Putting Frank back in front of him on the same day is almost cruel, but dramatically it works beautifully.
The Slough House erasure may ultimately be the premiere’s most intriguing idea. The team has always occupied an uncomfortable space inside MI5 — useful when needed and disposable when convenient. Season 6 makes that metaphor literal. Suddenly, the Park’s unwanted agents aren’t merely being ignored. On paper, they are disappearing.

Slow Horses Season 6 gets off to a confident start with an episode that turns the show’s long history into the source of its newest threat. “Circle of Life” balances River’s grief, Lamb’s suspicions and the mystery surrounding Slough House without rushing to explain how everything connects.
Most importantly, the premiere makes the danger feel personal. These aren’t anonymous intelligence assets being targeted. Someone knows who the Slow Horses are, who used to be one of them and where to find them.
