The episode still has room for a ridiculous opening built around Dancing with the Stars, a bizarre Florida crime and R.J. stumbling into danger through a connection from his prison days. At the same time, Victor’s death gives the season a mystery capable of tying the individual cases together emotionally.
Scott Speedman remains an easy fit for R.J.’s particular combination of competence and chaos. R.J. is good at what he does, but the entertainment frequently comes from watching his personal history make an already difficult situation considerably worse.
Jaina Lee Ortiz has the more complicated emotional assignment in the premiere. Emi has every reason to despise parts of what her father represented, but grief doesn’t follow a moral checklist. That conflict gives Ortiz plenty to work with while keeping Emi’s relationship with R.J. unsettled.
The premiere also wisely keeps the larger ensemble active. Wish and Catherine remain important pieces of R.J.’s unconventional support system, while Mel’s history with Winwood gives her a storyline that doesn’t simply make her another source of police information for R.J.
If Season 1 was about assembling this strange little South Florida team, Season 2 already looks interested in testing how well those relationships survive when the mystery is coming from inside their own history.
