Other Mommy topped the weekend box office with an estimated $27.5 million, giving Universal a clear No. 1 finish for October 9–11, 2026. The Jessica Chastain horror film opened more than $16 million ahead of Verity, which moved into second place after leading last weekend.
Resident Evil and Heart of the Beast remained in the Top 5 with relatively modest declines, while Sony’s The Social Reckoning debuted in fifth. The five leading films earned a combined $59.932 million; that figure covers the Top 5, rather than the entire domestic marketplace.
1. Other Mommy — $27.5 Million
Other Mommy opened with $27,500,000 from 3,365 theaters, averaging $8,172 per location. Universal’s release had the highest per-theater average among the five leading films, as well as the largest overall weekend gross.
Jessica Chastain leads Rob Savage’s supernatural horror film, adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House. Jay Duplass and Arabella Olivia Clark also star in the story of a young girl whose home becomes the center of an increasingly frightening encounter with a mysterious presence.
The opening puts Other Mommy comfortably ahead of the weekend’s other Top 5 newcomer. See our final trailer coverage for more on the premise and cast, or visit Universal’s official film page for theatrical information.
2. Verity — $11.482 Million
Verity earned an estimated $11,482,000 from 3,572 theaters in its second weekend, a 64% decline. The Amazon MGM Studios thriller averaged $3,214 per location and has now reached $53,861,000 domestically.
That is the steepest drop among the returning films in this week’s Top 5. Even with the largest theater count on the chart, Verity could not keep pace with Other Mommy’s opening.
Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett star in Michael Showalter’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, about a writer whose assignment draws her into a family’s unsettling private history. Read our spoiler-light Verity review for more on the performances and the film’s suspense.
3. Resident Evil — $8.35 Million
Sony’s Resident Evil took third place with $8,350,000 from 3,085 theaters, averaging $2,707 per location. The horror film fell 34% and brought its domestic total to $138,525,000.
The fourth-weekend result gives Resident Evil the smallest percentage decline among the three returning titles listed here. It also remains the highest-grossing film domestically in this week’s Top 5 by a substantial margin.
Austin Abrams leads Zach Cregger’s standalone story as a medical courier whose delivery becomes a fight for survival. Our Resident Evil review examines how Cregger brings the games’ tension and vulnerability to the screen.
4. Heart of the Beast — $7.1 Million

Brad Pitt stars in David Ayer’s film as a former Special Forces officer stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog, Odin. Read our spoiler-light Heart of the Beast review for more on the partnership that anchors the journey.
5. The Social Reckoning — $5.5 Million
The Social Reckoning opened in fifth place with $5,500,000 from 2,606 theaters, averaging $2,111 per location. Sony’s new release finished $1.6 million behind Heart of the Beast.
