Artemis Fowl is becoming an animated television series for Disney Channel and Disney+. Disney has greenlit a new adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling fantasy books, with the author joining the project as an executive producer.
Colfer announced the news during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel at New York Comic Con. The series arrives as the franchise celebrates the 25th anniversary of its first novel, published in 2001, and will give Colfer an opportunity to help explore its characters and lore in a new format.
Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson will executive produce alongside Colfer. Disney’s announcement establishes the project’s creative team and central premise, but does not include a premiere date or voice cast.
What Is the Artemis Fowl Animated Series About?
The action-adventure fantasy follows 13-year-old genius Artemis Fowl as he discovers an underground world of fairies. These are armed, dangerous and surprisingly well equipped with advanced technology.
Artemis launches a plan to capture a fairy and steal its magic, hoping to heal his dying mother and save his family. That mission puts a young human mastermind on a collision course with a hidden civilization whose capabilities extend far beyond what he might expect.
The premise combines the franchise’s fantasy world with the high-tech elements that distinguish its fairy society. Disney has not detailed how individual books will be adapted or how much material the first season will cover.
Eoin Colfer Joins the Executive Producing Team
Colfer’s involvement is a central part of the announcement. The author will serve as an executive producer, contributing his creative perspective as the adaptation digs further into the world he introduced to readers.
“I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the ‘Artemis Fowl’ animation on screen. Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands,” Colfer said.
Joining him is Ben Juwono, an Emmy and Annie Award winner whose credits include Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series. Fellow executive producer Colleen Evanson has worked on Prep and Landing: The Snowball Protocol, DuckTales and Monsters at Work.
A New Adaptation for the Books’ 25th Anniversary
Since the first novel’s publication in 2001, the Artemis Fowl books have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and been translated into 48 languages, according to Disney. Readers can explore the franchise through Disney Publishing’s Artemis Fowl book collection.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, said the animated adaptation is intended to welcome new viewers while recognizing the readers who have followed the books for years.
“Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years,” Davis said.
The project joins Disney+’s animation slate alongside Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb and Big City Greens, as well as upcoming titles including Messi and the Giants, Kingdom Hearts, Warrior Cats and Journey.
When Will Artemis Fowl Premiere?
Artemis Fowl is set for Disney Channel and Disney+, with a premiere date still to be announced. Disney’s official series announcement does not specify an episode count, voice cast or release schedule.
