The weekend box office belonged to Scary Movie, as Paramount’s horror-comedy revival opened in first place with $55 million from 3,490 theaters. The film averaged $15,759 per location, giving the long-running parody franchise a strong return to theaters and proving that nostalgia for Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, and Shawn Wayans still has major audience pull.
In second place, Masters of the Universe debuted with $29.3 million for Amazon MGM Studios. Playing in 3,677 locations, the He-Man adventure posted a $7,971 per-theater average and gave the studio a solid launch for the long-awaited fantasy reboot.
Backrooms landed in third place with $25.9 million, bringing the A24 horror hit to $135.1 million domestically. While the film fell 69% from last weekend, it remains one of the year’s biggest genre success stories and continues to show the strength of original horror at the box office.
Focus Features’ Obsession took fourth place with $25.6 million, pushing its domestic total to $152.1 million. Even with a 43% drop, the thriller continues to hold well and remains one of the summer’s most impressive breakout performers.
Rounding out the Top 5 was The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, which earned $12.7 million from 2,221 theaters for Fathom Entertainment. The animated event release has now reached $21.1 million domestically, a strong result for a fan-driven theatrical title.
With Scary Movie opening big, Masters of the Universe starting solidly, and Backrooms and Obsession continuing to perform, the weekend delivered another healthy mix of franchise nostalgia, genre hits, and event-style releases.
