Weekend Box Office: Disclosure Day Opens At #1 With $44 Million Debut

Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi thriller DISCLOSURE DAY soared to the top of the weekend box office, delivering a strong $44 million domestic debut and giving Universal another major summer hit.

Opening in 3,824 theaters, DISCLOSURE DAY earned an impressive per-theater average of $11,506 as audiences turned out to see Spielberg’s latest big-screen adventure starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor. The film easily claimed the No. 1 spot and now heads into its second weekend with strong momentum and positive word of mouth.

Finishing in second place was OBSESSION, which added another $19 million to its impressive run. The psychological thriller dipped just 25% from last weekend and has now amassed $188.4 million domestically. With its modest production budget and outstanding legs, the film continues to be one of the summer’s biggest success stories.

Paramount’s SCARY MOVIE landed in third place with $14.5 million. While the horror-comedy sequel experienced a steep 73% drop from its opening weekend, it has still generated a solid $84.6 million domestic total and remains on pace to become one of the franchise’s highest-grossing entries.

A24’s breakout horror phenomenon BACKROOMS continued its theatrical run with $11.3 million, bringing its domestic total to an impressive $160 million. Despite a 57% decline, the film remains one of the year’s biggest surprise hits and has significantly outperformed expectations since its debut.

Rounding out the Top 5 was MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, which earned $8.7 million in its latest weekend. The fantasy adventure has now reached $46.7 million domestically but continues to face challenges maintaining momentum against increasingly crowded summer competition.

Final Thoughts

While several holdovers continued to perform well, the weekend clearly belonged to DISCLOSURE DAY. Spielberg’s return to the science fiction genre delivered one of the strongest openings of the summer and instantly established itself as a major player at the box office. The coming weeks will determine whether the film can maintain its momentum, but Universal has every reason to celebrate after such a successful launch.

At the same time, OBSESSION and BACKROOMS continue to demonstrate remarkable staying power, proving that strong audience engagement can still drive significant theatrical success well beyond opening weekend.
