THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND Review: Jennifer Garner Anchors A Warm, Emotional Drama About Friendship And Second Chances

Sometimes the best stories aren’t about solving a murder or uncovering a conspiracy—they’re about finding your way back to yourself. THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND embraces that idea with a heartfelt adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel, using grief, friendship, and long-buried secrets to create an engaging ensemble drama led by another excellent performance from Jennifer Garner.

While the series occasionally leans into familiar melodrama, its emotional honesty and outstanding cast make it an easy binge. Rather than chasing shocking twists, THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND succeeds by focusing on complicated relationships and the healing power of reconnecting with the people who knew you best.

Jennifer Garner Leads An Outstanding Ensemble

Garner stars as Hollis Shaw, a successful food influencer whose carefully constructed life is shattered after the sudden death of her husband. Hoping to rediscover herself, Hollis invites four women from different chapters of her life to her Nantucket home for a “five-star weekend,” believing old friendships might help her move forward.

It’s a deceptively simple premise that allows each character room to shine. Regina HallChloë SevignyGemma Chan, and D’Arcy Carden all bring emotional depth to women carrying their own baggage, while the chemistry between the ensemble keeps every conversation feeling authentic. Even when individual storylines occasionally drift into familiar territory, the performances consistently elevate the material.

More Than A Beach Read Adaptation

Fans expecting another glossy mystery in the vein of recent coastal dramas may be surprised.

Instead of centering the story around a murder or elaborate conspiracy, THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND focuses on grief, forgiveness, marriage, motherhood, aging, and identity. The beautiful Nantucket setting provides the perfect backdrop, but it’s the emotional conversations between these women that ultimately become the show’s greatest strength.

The slower pace won’t work for everyone, yet it allows each friendship to develop naturally and gives the emotional moments room to breathe.

Gorgeous Locations And Strong Performances

Visually, the series is exactly what viewers hope for from an Elin Hilderbrand adaptation.

The sweeping Nantucket scenery, luxurious homes, and coastal atmosphere create an inviting sense of escapism without overwhelming the emotional core of the story. Director Minkie Spiro balances beautiful visuals with intimate character moments, making the series feel both elegant and personal.

The supporting cast deserves just as much credit as Garner. D’Arcy Carden frequently steals scenes with her mix of humor and vulnerability, while Regina Hall and Gemma Chan bring welcome complexity to characters who could have easily been reduced to familiar archetypes.

Final Verdict

THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND isn’t trying to reinvent the ensemble drama, and it doesn’t need to. Strong performances, emotionally grounded writing, and a genuinely likable cast make this one of Peacock’s most satisfying original series of the year.

Viewers looking for mystery or nonstop twists may find it a little too restrained, but anyone who enjoys character-driven stories about friendship, loss, and second chances will likely find plenty to love.
