The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Episode 8, “Tenebrae,” ends the season by finally turning Maggie and Negan from reluctant allies into something neither of them would have imagined when this story began: family.
Getting there requires one final battle with Mason Dillard (Jimmi Simpson), a rescue mission through walker-filled Manhattan and another brutal test of just how far Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) have come.
The finale doesn’t completely solve Season 3’s biggest problem — Dillard’s transformation from eccentric bartender into murderous villain happened far too quickly — but “Tenebrae” finds something worthwhile in the wreckage. The real payoff isn’t defeating Dillard. It’s Maggie finally acknowledging what Negan has become to her.
Dillard Turns Renata Into One of His Walkers
“Tenebrae” wastes little time establishing just how far Dillard has fallen.
The episode opens by returning to his bizarre relationship with Cockenspiel and Titicaca, the walkers he treated as friends during his years of isolation. From Dillard’s perspective, they’re almost a sitcom family, complete with normal conversations and a laugh track.
Reality is considerably uglier.
Renata (Aimee Garcia), whom Dillard shot at the end of “Hourglass,” has died and turned. Dillard restrains her and removes her teeth so she can replace one of his lost walker companions — forcing her brother Luis (Raúl Castillo) to watch.
It’s grotesque, cruel and designed to make absolutely certain there is no ambiguity left about Dillard.
The problem is that Dead City only recently decided this was who Dillard was going to become. Jimmi Simpson commits completely to the madness, but the character’s rapid transformation remains difficult to reconcile with the strange but sympathetic man Negan befriended earlier in the season.
Maggie Refuses to Let Negan Sacrifice Himself
Outside the community, Maggie, Negan and Hershel (Logan Kim) have to figure out how to rescue everyone without handing Dillard exactly what he wants.
Dillard has the weapons, the manpower and Luis as leverage. Negan’s instinct is predictable: surrender himself and give Dillard the person he really wants.
Maggie refuses.
She has already lost too many people, and this time she includes Negan among the people she refuses to lose.
It’s one of the most important conversations Maggie and Negan have had across three seasons of Dead City. Maggie doesn’t erase Glenn. She doesn’t forgive what Negan did to him. But she finally stops pretending their lives haven’t become permanently intertwined.
Aside from Hershel, Negan has become the closest thing to family Maggie has left.
That’s a remarkable destination for these characters, and unlike Dillard’s villain turn, it has been earned slowly.
Maggie, Negan and Hershel Fight Back
Instead of sacrificing Negan, the three create a plan that requires each of them to take a role.
Negan draws walkers toward Dillard’s forces. Maggie unleashes another group of the dead into the streets. Hershel takes the high ground and helps turn the captive survivors against Dillard’s guards.
Hershel’s transformation this season has been almost as dramatic as anyone’s. The kid who once existed primarily as the source of tension between Maggie and Negan is now actively participating in the survival of their community.
He proves it again when Radomir opens fire and Hershel kills him with a thrown knife.
Meanwhile, Maggie reaches Luis before Kelsey can execute him. Their escape takes them through the hospital, where Luis discovers what Dillard has done to Renata.
Luis can’t leave his sister trapped as a walker. Maggie gives him a knife, and he puts Renata down.
It’s a grim final moment for a character who spent much of the season trying to build something better in Manhattan.
Dillard Forces Negan to Stab Maggie
The final confrontation brings Maggie, Negan and Dillard together — and Dillard decides killing Negan isn’t enough.
He wants revenge for the walker companions Negan destroyed, but more importantly, he wants to destroy the relationship that has formed between Negan and Maggie.
Holding them at gunpoint, Dillard demands that Negan prove Maggie isn’t his friend by stabbing her.
Negan does it.
He drives the knife into Maggie’s abdomen without killing her, buying himself an opportunity to turn on Dillard. Maggie is then left wounded with walkers closing in while Negan and Dillard fight.
The sequence is messy and arguably asks for more suspension of disbelief than it earns, but it does bring the season’s central relationships crashing together. Dillard is obsessed with the friend he believes betrayed him. Negan is desperately trying to protect the woman whose husband he murdered. Maggie once again has to trust that Negan’s apparent act of violence isn’t what it seems.
And this time, she does.
Maggie Kills Dillard — Almost
Dillard eventually gets the upper hand and prepares to kill Negan with Lucille.
Maggie intervenes in spectacular fashion, severing Dillard’s arm before he can finish the job.
She is prepared to kill him, but Negan stops her.
Instead, Negan holds his dying former friend and offers him something surprisingly close to compassion. Dillard spent years finding companionship among the dead, so Negan allows him to join them.
Dillard dies and eventually reanimates as a walker, wandering Manhattan among the creatures he always considered his friends.
It’s a fitting ending even if the journey that brought Dillard there never entirely works. Simpson’s performance makes the character’s final moments more affecting than the rushed villain arc deserves.
Jimmi Simpson told Entertainment Weekly that he knew Dillard’s ultimate fate from the beginning, allowing him to shape the character’s strange attachment to the walkers around where his story would eventually end.
The Dead City Season 3 Finale Gives Negan a New Job
With Dillard gone, the finale jumps ahead to show the community beginning to recover.
Maggie has emerged as its leader. Hershel continues his medical training under Luis and memorializes Renata. Negan, meanwhile, has something he hasn’t had in a very long time: a home.
And Maggie gives him something else.
A badge.
She wants Negan to run security for the community.
The symbolism isn’t subtle, but it works. Negan spent years ruling people through fear. Now Maggie is trusting him to protect the community she’s trying to build.
Then she reminds him that Manhattan isn’t the whole city. Four more boroughs remain.
Maggie has another job for him.
Negan’s answer is simple: he’s in.
Final Verdict
“Tenebrae” is a stronger conclusion to Maggie and Negan’s Season 3 journey than it is to Dillard’s abrupt villain arc.
The action is entertaining, Dillard’s walker fate has an appropriately twisted poetry to it, and Jimmi Simpson throws himself into every strange choice the episode gives him. But the finale can’t completely overcome how quickly the season transformed Dillard simply because it needed a final antagonist.
What does work — and works extremely well — is Maggie and Negan.
Three seasons of Dead City have gradually moved them beyond the repetitive question of whether Maggie can forgive Negan. “Tenebrae” finally arrives at the more interesting answer: she doesn’t have to forgive him to acknowledge that he has become part of her family.
Giving Negan responsibility for protecting Maggie’s community is a satisfying culmination of that evolution, while the final tease leaves an obvious path forward if AMC decides there is more story to tell.
Season 3 took some strange detours getting here, but its most important relationship ends in exactly the right place.

Who Dies in The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Finale?
Mason Dillard, Renata and Radomir die during the Dead City Season 3 finale. Renata dies from the gunshot wound Dillard inflicted in Episode 7 and is later put down by Luis after reanimating. Hershel kills Radomir with a thrown knife during the rescue. Maggie severs Dillard’s arm during the final confrontation, and he subsequently dies before reanimating as a walker.
Why does Negan stab Maggie?
Negan stabs Maggie because Dillard holds them at gunpoint and demands that Negan prove Maggie isn’t his friend. Negan wounds Maggie without killing her, creating an opportunity to fight Dillard. Maggie giving Negan a badge and asking him to run security completes one of Dead City‘s biggest character reversals. What does Maggie want Negan to do next?
The finale doesn’t reveal the exact mission Maggie has planned for Negan, but her reference to New York City’s four other boroughs makes the direction clear.
