Netflix has released the first official teaser for The Diplomat Season 4, and Kate Wyler may be facing her most complicated political crisis yet — with her own husband helping create it.
Keri Russell returns as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler alongside Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn as the Emmy-nominated political drama prepares for its fourth season.
This time, the international crisis and the characters’ increasingly complicated marriages are becoming almost impossible to separate.
According to Netflix, one catastrophic event will shatter the fragile peace Kate brokered between the United States and United Kingdom while further destabilizing her already troubled marriage to Hal.
And Hal has considerably more than marital problems waiting for Kate.
Grace Penn and Hal Wyler Are Playing a Dangerous Game
Season 4 finds President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler involved in a conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon, putting the United States on a path that could lead directly to war.
That’s quite a partnership considering Kate’s complicated history with both of them.
Kate has spent much of The Diplomat navigating the collision between personal relationships and international politics, but Season 4 appears ready to push that idea even further. Hal isn’t simply creating another political headache for his wife — he’s now the Vice President of the United States and apparently conspiring with the President herself.
Stopping them will require another unlikely alliance.

Kate and Todd Penn Join Forces in The Diplomat Season 4
Kate and Todd Penn, played by Bradley Whitford, have hardly been natural partners.
Season 4 will change that.
Netflix says the uneasy pair will unite in an attempt to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upsetting the balance of power both internationally and at home.
That sets up an especially intriguing four-character dynamic for the new season.
Kate and Hal’s marriage has always existed somewhere between partnership and mutually assured destruction, while Grace and Todd bring their own complicated relationship into the equation.
Now the two marriages are effectively being divided into opposing teams.
And with the United States potentially heading toward war, their domestic problems suddenly have international consequences.
