Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap and Review: “Vote for Sampson”

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7, “Vote for Sampson,” finally reveals what everyone has been willing to kill for.

After weeks of chasing Anna Merrick’s photograph, Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) and Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel) learn that the secret hidden inside it isn’t simply evidence of an old government scandal. It contains the information needed to recreate a deadly chemical weapon.

That revelation connects Leo Ahlquist, Nolan Cahill, Congressman John Sampson and the operation in Indonesia — while giving Lila and Amisha something much more dangerous than information they can sell.

By the end of “Vote for Sampson,” the conspiracy has become an imminent mass-casualty attack, and Sampson makes a split-second decision that may have saved thousands of lives at the cost of his own.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap

“Vote for Sampson” picks up directly from the Episode 6 cliffhanger, with Reacher and Tamara handcuffed in the back of a van and Ahlquist’s mercenaries preparing to execute them in the woods.

Their situation looks hopeless until the gunmen are distracted by a stranger asking for directions.

Two shots later, both mercenaries are dead.

The shooter is Springfield, Congressman John Sampson’s security chief.

Springfield explains that Sampson sent him to find Reacher and get to the bottom of what was happening. He spotted Reacher and Tamara being loaded unconscious into the van, followed the mercenaries and waited for an opportunity to intervene.

That clears up one of the ambiguities left hanging over Sampson. His order for Springfield to “handle” Reacher wasn’t an assassination order after all.

Docherty Lets Jacob Go

Jacob Merrick is facing his own apparent execution after Detective Shaun Docherty takes him away at gunpoint. Instead, Docherty brings Jacob into an alley and reveals that he intends to let him escape.

Docherty has finally accepted that something much larger is happening. The supposed Philadelphia police officer who tried to kill Reacher in custody convinced him that Reacher wasn’t imagining the conspiracy, and his trust in Tamara helps push him the rest of the way.

To make Jacob’s escape believable, Docherty has Jacob strike him with his own gun so he can claim he was overpowered.

Jacob tells Docherty that Reacher and Tamara went to Delaware looking for Ahlquist. Docherty also reveals that police found evidence of a makeshift chemistry operation at the abandoned restaurant Lila and Amisha had been using.

Whatever they are planning, it involves more than the photograph itself.

Reacher Gets the Truth From Leo Ahlquist

Reacher isn’t interested in giving Leo Ahlquist another opportunity to disappear.

Using the van taken from the mercenaries, he crashes into Ahlquist’s vehicle and forces the chemist off the road. Reacher, Tamara and Springfield then resume the interrogation that Ahlquist escaped earlier.

This time Reacher makes sure he talks.

Ahlquist reveals that his connection to Indonesia dates back to a secret American chemical-weapons program. The United States wanted to develop dangerous chemical agents so researchers could also develop defenses and antidotes against them.

The work couldn’t be conducted openly in the United States, so a covert laboratory was established in Indonesia as part of an arrangement involving General Reza Putra.

Ahlquist worked on the program while Sampson and Cahill were also in Indonesia, although Sampson did not know what was really happening inside the laboratory.

What Is Hidden in Anna Merrick’s Photograph?

The photograph everyone has been hunting contains something far more valuable than an embarrassing picture of American personnel with Putra.

In the background is a whiteboard containing the formula for a deadly chemical agent.

The writing was too blurred to be useful when the photograph was originally taken. Modern image-processing technology, however, can recover enough information from the image to reconstruct the formula.

That means Anna Merrick unknowingly obtained the blueprint for a weapon of mass destruction.

Ahlquist explains that diluted versions of his chemical research eventually became the foundation for the pesticides that made him wealthy. The original formula, however, was designed to kill people.

Lila and Amisha now have what they need to recreate it.

Lila and Amisha Test Their Chemical Weapon

Elsewhere, Lila and Amisha prove that Ahlquist’s fears are justified.

They have successfully produced the chemical agent and test it on a man they have lured into their makeshift laboratory. The results are horrific, with the victim rapidly convulsing and bleeding as the toxin kills him.

The experiment confirms that their weapon works.

Ahlquist believes their plan is to demonstrate the weapon on a large group of people and then sell it to the highest bidder.

Jacob soon provides confirmation. Information obtained through Russell Plum’s sources points to a dark-web auction advertising a “proof of concept.”

In other words, Lila and Amisha aren’t merely threatening an attack.

They need one.

Reacher Kills Leo Ahlquist

Once Ahlquist has explained the weapon, he tries to convince Reacher that he can be trusted to keep quiet.

Reacher isn’t buying it.

If a few broken fingers were enough to make Ahlquist reveal everything he knows, Reacher reasons that Lila and Amisha could extract the same information if they ever captured him.

Ahlquist also attempts to justify the people who have died by pointing to the agricultural benefits produced by his work.

Reacher has heard enough.

He snaps Ahlquist’s neck.

Springfield is stunned that Reacher would execute him so openly, but Tamara understands the calculation. As far as Reacher is concerned, leaving Ahlquist alive means leaving another route to the chemical weapon open.

Reacher Searches for the Target

With the weapon confirmed and a demonstration coming, the problem becomes finding the target.

Reacher, Tamara and Jacob initially focus on the Mann Center, where thousands of people are gathering for an outdoor event. Docherty helps get the venue checked, but no attacker or chemical weapon is found.

They consider other possibilities, including morning traffic, but Reacher’s next call to Sampson finally produces the missing piece.

Sampson is attending a large fundraiser at Penn’s Landing.

More importantly, he finally tells Reacher the rest of the truth about Indonesia.

Sampson Reveals He Killed General Putra

Sampson wasn’t merely present in Indonesia.

He was part of the American operation sent after General Putra — and Sampson was the man who killed him.

Amisha saw it happen.

Suddenly the target makes sense. Attacking Sampson’s fundraiser would allow Lila and Amisha to accomplish two things at once: demonstrate their chemical weapon to potential buyers and take revenge on the man who killed Putra.

Reacher realizes they are likely using a suicide bomber to disperse the agent through the crowd.

That brings the season back to where it started.

Reacher walks Sampson through the same behavioral warning signs he used when he mistakenly believed Anna Merrick was a suicide bomber on the subway.

This time, those signs lead Sampson to a real one.

Sampson Tackles the Bomber Into the River

Sampson spots Tomas Waberi in the crowd carrying a large backpack and realizes he is the attacker.

Reacher races toward the fundraiser, but his arrival attracts attention. Waberi realizes something is wrong and prepares to trigger the device.

Sampson doesn’t wait for Reacher.

He charges Waberi and tackles him over the edge into the Delaware River.

Seconds later, the bomb explodes underwater.

Reacher arrives in time to witness the blast but not to stop it.

The episode ends on his stunned reaction, with Sampson’s fate unknown and no immediate confirmation that putting the explosion underwater was enough to contain the chemical agent.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Review

“Vote for Sampson” has the unenviable job of explaining nearly every mystery Reacher Season 4 has accumulated before next week’s finale, and you can occasionally feel the weight of that assignment.

The lengthy interrogation of Ahlquist is the clearest example. Shawn Doyle does strong work selling Ahlquist’s fear and pain, but there is an enormous amount of information that has to come out of one man’s mouth: Indonesia, the laboratory, the photograph, the chemical formula, Cahill and the origins of Ahlquist’s business.

It’s necessary exposition, but it slows an episode that otherwise has considerable urgency.

What works is that the answers finally bring the seemingly disconnected pieces of the season together. Anna’s photograph wasn’t important because of who was standing in it. The real secret was sitting unnoticed in the background the entire time.

The episode also does a nice job reversing our assumptions about Sampson and Springfield. Marc Blucas has played Sampson with enough ambiguity that suspecting him made sense, but his final decision proves what kind of man he is when there is no time left for politics or explanations.

Alan Ritchson also gets one of Reacher’s colder moments when he kills Ahlquist. It isn’t played as a triumphant action beat. Reacher simply concludes that Ahlquist remains a security risk and eliminates him, while Tamara’s willingness to accept that decision shows how far she has traveled since first encountering him.

The Penn’s Landing sequence is easily the episode’s strongest stretch. Returning to the suicide-bomber checklist from the season premiere gives the story satisfying symmetry, except this time the threat Reacher was looking for is real.

For an exposition-heavy penultimate episode, “Vote for Sampson” ultimately does what it needs to do. The mystery is largely solved. The weapon is real. Lila and Amisha remain at large. And Reacher now has one episode left to make everyone responsible for Anna Merrick’s death pay.

Final Verdict

“Vote for Sampson” occasionally buckles under the amount of exposition required to explain Season 4’s conspiracy, but the answers are satisfying enough to justify the wait. Sampson’s desperate tackle into the Delaware gives the episode the explosive finish it needs and sends Reacher into its finale with the mystery finally out of the way and the real threat fully exposed.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Ending Explained: Is Sampson Dead?

The ending of “Vote for Sampson” leaves Congressman John Sampson’s fate deliberately unresolved. After realizing that Lila and Amisha plan to use his Penn’s Landing fundraiser as the proof-of-concept demonstration for their chemical weapon, Sampson searches the crowd for a suicide bomber.

He identifies Tomas Waberi carrying a suspicious backpack just as Reacher arrives. When Waberi prepares to activate the device, Sampson tackles him over the edge and into the Delaware River. The bomb detonates underwater with both men still in the water.

The episode does not show Sampson emerging after the explosion and does not confirm that he is dead, leaving his fate as one of the major questions heading into the Season 4 finale. His actions appear to prevent the weapon from detonating in the middle of the fundraiser crowd, although the episode also stops short of confirming that the chemical threat has been completely contained.

Sampson was more than a convenient target. He finally reveals that he was the American operative who killed General Putra in Indonesia, something Amisha witnessed. Attacking his fundraiser therefore allowed Lila and Amisha to combine their planned demonstration of the chemical weapon with revenge against the man responsible for Putra’s death.

The attack also completes the episode’s explanation of Anna Merrick’s photograph. The important secret wasn’t the people pictured with Putra but the whiteboard visible in the background, which contained the formula for the chemical weapon. Modern technology made the previously unreadable information recoverable, turning Anna’s photograph into a blueprint for the weapon Lila and Amisha recreated.
