Reacher Season 4 Episode 6 Recap & Review: “Plum Out of Luck”

Jack Reacher has spent much of Reacher Season 4 trying to figure out who is manipulating whom. In Episode 6, “Plum Out of Luck,” he finally starts getting some answers — and nearly gets himself killed finding them.

The episode picks up directly from last week’s standoff, with Lila holding Jacob at knifepoint and demanding Anna Merrick’s thumb drive. Before anyone can resolve the situation, Russell Plum walks into exactly the wrong room at exactly the wrong time.

What follows sends Plum to the hospital, puts the drive back into Lila and Amisha’s hands and sends Reacher(Alan Ritchson) and Tamara toward Leo Ahlquist, the mysterious fourth man in Anna’s photograph.

By the end of the episode, however, Reacher has an even bigger problem.

For once, he doesn’t appear to have an escape plan.

Plum Walks Into A Deadly Standoff

“Plum Out of Luck” wastes no time resolving the cliffhanger from “Bridge.”

Lila and Amisha have Jacob trapped and want the thumb drive. Reacher has it, but surrendering the drive means handing over the only real piece of evidence explaining what happened to Anna.

Then Plum arrives.

Before the situation can settle, armed mercenaries storm the restaurant amid smoke and gunfire. Plum is shot in the chest while Reacher, Tamara, Lila and Amisha battle their way through the chaos.

Lila and Amisha ultimately escape through the basement with the drive.

Reacher has lost the evidence, his enemies have escaped and Plum is left fighting for his life.

But Plum gives them one crucial lead before Jacob rushes him to the hospital.

The unidentified scientist in Anna’s photograph is Leo Ahlquist, the CEO of Plutus Chemical.

Reacher And Tamara Find Leo Ahlquist

With a name finally attached to the mysterious fourth man, Reacher and Tamara turn their attention to Ahlquist and Plutus Chemical.

Getting there isn’t easy.

With Reacher and Tamara’s faces circulating across Philadelphia, normal transportation is too risky. They hide in the cargo compartment of a bus, where Tamara’s claustrophobia begins getting the better of her.

Reacher distracts her with multiplication problems, and the conversation eventually turns toward Tamara’s past.

She explains that her career as a police officer fell apart after she refused to protect a politically connected college student accused of assaulting a waitress. Despite pressure to make the situation disappear, Tamara arrested and publicly embarrassed him.

Her decision came with consequences.

The experience helps explain both Tamara’s distrust of authority and why she has been willing to follow Reacher so deeply into Anna’s case.

What Are Lila And Amisha Looking For?

Meanwhile, Lila and Amisha finally have Anna’s thumb drive.

Their attention turns toward the photograph and something that has been hiding in plain sight.

The mystery may not simply be who is standing in the picture.

It’s what’s behind them.

Their computer specialist begins examining information visible in the background of the photograph, including material written on a whiteboard behind the people pictured.

Whatever they’re attempting to recover appears valuable enough that potential buyers are already waiting for an auction.

That changes the significance of Anna’s photograph.

Reacher has been concentrating on the people pictured — Congressman John Sampson, Nolan Cahill, General Putra and Leo Ahlquist — because their connection seemingly explains why Anna was killed.

But the photograph may contain something far more valuable than proof those men once met.

Jacob Makes A Dangerous Call

Jacob manages to get Plum to the hospital, but bringing in a man suffering from a gunshot wound inevitably attracts attention.

Once authorities recognize Jacob as one of the people being hunted alongside Reacher, he has little choice but to flee.

Running out of options, Jacob calls his Uncle Monty for help.

Monty meets him and initially appears willing to provide somewhere safe to go. Instead, he decides the situation has become too dangerous and turns Jacob over to the police.

Unfortunately, the officer who arrives is Detective Shaun Docherty.

Jacob immediately understands the danger.

Monty doesn’t — at least not initially.

But as Docherty takes control of Jacob, Monty begins realizing that handing his nephew over may have been a serious mistake.

Ahlquist Knows More Than He’s Saying

Reacher and Tamara eventually reach Plutus Chemical and find Ahlquist destroying evidence.

They confront him, but Ahlquist refuses to explain what Anna discovered or why so many people are trying to recover her information.

Instead, he calls someone named Vance, supposedly his lawyer.

Reacher recognizes Vance as one of the mercenaries connected to an earlier attack.

Ahlquist finally admits that he hired the mercenaries to recover Anna’s information, directly connecting Plutus Chemical to the operation hunting the thumb drive.

What he still refuses to reveal is why the information matters.

A fight follows as Reacher takes on Vance and his men.

Reacher manages to overpower several of them, with Vance suffering a particularly brutal encounter with an industrial shredder, but sheer numbers eventually become too much.

Multiple stun guns bring Reacher down.

Tamara is overwhelmed as well.

Reacher And Tamara Wake Up In A Van

When Reacher regains consciousness, he and Tamara are handcuffed inside the back of a van.

Plastic lines the interior.

Reacher immediately understands what that means.

Nobody is transporting them to another interrogation.

They’re being taken somewhere to be killed.

Tamara asks Reacher what they’re going to do, but there isn’t an obvious escape available. He estimates they have less than half an hour before reaching their destination.

Eventually, the van stops.

The doors open.

Armed men are waiting outside.

And Episode 6 cuts to black.

Reacher Finally Runs Out Of Moves

“Plum Out of Luck” works because it gradually takes away the thing Jack Reacher usually possesses even when he’s outnumbered: control.

By the end of the episode, Reacher has lost Anna’s thumb drive, Plum is hospitalized, Jacob is in police custody, Ahlquist has refused to reveal the truth and Reacher and Tamara are handcuffed in the back of a van being driven toward what appears to be their execution.

That’s an unusual position for this character.

Reacher normally walks into danger with some understanding of how he’s going to walk back out. Here, even he appears uncertain that there is an exit.

Tamara’s story also gives the episode some needed emotional weight. Her explanation of how she damaged her career by refusing to protect a politically connected college student reinforces why she and Reacher have become such effective partners.

Neither is particularly interested in accepting authority when authority is clearly wrong.

More importantly, Episode 6 finally begins converting Season 4’s sprawling conspiracy into something tangible.

Anna’s photograph may matter less because of the powerful people standing in it than because of the information accidentally captured behind them. Ahlquist’s connection to Plutus Chemical and his desperation to recover the drive suggest the conspiracy is rooted in whatever happened decades ago — not simply in protecting someone’s reputation today.

That gives the final two episodes a much clearer question to answer.

Not just who killed Anna Merrick?

But what did Anna discover that so many people are willing to kill to keep hidden?

And the closing sequence is effective precisely because we know Reacher isn’t going to die.

The suspense isn’t whether he survives.

It’s how someone who has finally run out of obvious moves manages to regain control.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 6 Ending Explained: Who Captured Reacher And Tamara?

The men taking Reacher and Tamara to their apparent execution are connected to Vance and Leo Ahlquist, rather than Lila and Amisha.

Ahlquist hired Vance's mercenary operation to recover Anna's information. Once Reacher and Tamara discover Ahlquist's involvement and catch him destroying evidence at Plutus Chemical, they become another problem that needs to disappear.

The plastic lining the van makes their captors' intentions especially clear.

Reacher and Tamara aren't prisoners.

They're intended victims.

Inside the van, Reacher calculates how much time they probably have left. Tamara wants to know how they're going to escape, but for once Reacher doesn't have an obvious solution.

Instead, he prepares her for the possibility that they may not.

The van stops, the doors open and armed men wait outside.

Obviously, Reacher isn't about to kill Jack Reacher with two episodes remaining, so the real cliffhanger isn't whether Reacher survives.

It's how he gets out of a situation where he appears to have finally run out of moves.

Does Russell Plum Die In Episode 6?

No — at least not during “Plum Out of Luck.”

Plum is shot in the chest during the restaurant attack, but Jacob manages to get him to a hospital.

The episode leaves Plum receiving medical treatment rather than confirming his death.

His shooting does, however, create another major problem for Jacob. Getting Plum medical attention exposes Jacob's location and ultimately forces him to seek help from Monty, which leads directly to Jacob ending up in police custody.

What Does Anna's Photograph Really Contain?

This remains the episode's biggest unanswered question.

Anna's photograph shows Sampson, Cahill, General Putra and Ahlquist together roughly 25 years earlier, but Episode 6 strongly suggests the people themselves aren't the most valuable information captured in the image.

Lila and Amisha are attempting to recover information visible in its background, particularly material on a whiteboard.

Ahlquist's desperation to destroy evidence at Plutus Chemical reinforces the possibility that the photograph accidentally captured information connected to something the men were developing or discussing decades earlier.

And Lila and Amisha aren't simply trying to expose that secret.

They're preparing to sell something.

That may explain why multiple factions are willing to kill for the same thumb drive.

Anna didn't simply discover who knew whom.

She may have discovered what they were hiding.

Is “Plum Out Of Luck” Worth Watching?

Absolutely.

“Plum Out of Luck” pushes the central mystery forward, gives Tamara some of her strongest material of the season and leaves Reacher in an unusually vulnerable position heading into the final two episodes.

It also finally begins bringing the season's various threads together. Ahlquist, Plutus Chemical, Anna's photograph and the mysterious information on the thumb drive are starting to look like pieces of the same puzzle.

With only two episodes remaining, Reacher has positioned everything for the answers to start coming quickly.

With Reacher and Tamara facing an apparent execution, Jacob in police custody and Anna's photograph finally beginning to reveal its real importance, Episode 7 should push the investigation toward the answers Reacher has been chasing all season.

Season 4 concludes September 16 with Episode 8, “Cut.”
