Legends is officially heading back undercover.
Netflix has renewed the British crime drama Legends for Season 2, with Tom Burke and Steve Coogan returning for another story inspired by the dangerous real-life work of British Customs officers who infiltrated major drug organizations during the 1990s.
Creator and writer Neil Forsyth will also return, promising that the second season will move the story further into the late 1990s as the undercover operation becomes even more dangerous.
Legends Season 2 Is Official at Netflix
Netflix announced the renewal on August 24, 2026, following the six-episode first season that premiered in May.
Legends follows a group of seemingly ordinary Customs officers who are recruited for an extraordinary assignment: assume carefully constructed false identities — their “legends” — and infiltrate some of Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs.
Rather than leaving the series as a one-season true-crime-inspired story, Netflix and Forsyth will now continue exploring the undercover operation as it moves deeper into the decade.
Forsyth said Season 2 gives him the opportunity to tell a new story within the unusual world established by the first season, while exploring how dangerous and important the officers’ work became during the late 1990s.
Tom Burke and Steve Coogan Will Return for Legends Season 2
Netflix has specifically confirmed that Tom Burke and Steve Coogan will return for the second season.
Burke stars as Guy, one of the Customs officers sent deep undercover, while Coogan plays Don, whose work helps build and manage the elaborate identities the agents need to survive inside the criminal world.
Their return gives Season 2 a direct connection to the first season while allowing Forsyth to tell another story from the history of the undercover unit.
Netflix has not yet announced the complete Season 2 cast.
What Will Legends Season 2 Be About?
Exact plot details remain under wraps, but Netflix says the new season will continue following the undercover operatives as their work infiltrating Britain’s drug gangs progresses into the late 1990s.
That’s an important detail because it suggests Season 2 won’t simply repeat the operation depicted during the first six episodes.
The first season showed the enormous psychological cost of creating a second identity and living inside it for extended periods of time. The officers weren’t simply pretending to be criminals during individual operations — they had to build convincing lives capable of surviving scrutiny from people who could kill them if the deception failed.
Moving forward in time gives Legends an opportunity to explore new operations, criminal organizations and consequences while continuing the personal stories of the officers involved.
Is Legends Based on a True Story?
Yes. Legends is inspired by the real work of British Customs officers who went undercover to infiltrate international drug-trafficking organizations during the 1990s.
The series isn’t presented as a documentary or a literal recreation of every event. Forsyth uses the real undercover operation as the foundation for the drama and its fictionalized characters.
That gives the series room to explore something beyond the mechanics of catching drug traffickers: what happens psychologically when an ordinary person spends months or years pretending to be somebody else.

Netflix has so far specifically announced Burke and Coogan for Season 2. Additional returning and new cast members are expected to be revealed as production gets closer.

Netflix has not announced a release date for Legends Season 2.
The renewal is still new, so casting, production dates and a premiere window remain to be announced.
For now, all six episodes of Legends Season 1 are streaming on Netflix.
Why Legends Season 2 Makes Sense for Netflix
Legends occupies an interesting corner of Netflix’s increasingly broad British drama lineup.
It’s part crime thriller, part espionage drama and part character study, with the added hook of being inspired by a remarkable real undercover operation.
More importantly, the premise doesn’t necessarily end with one investigation.
By moving into another period of the unit’s history, Legends can function almost like an ongoing undercover crime anthology while retaining characters audiences already know.
And with Tom Burke and Steve Coogan already confirmed to return, Netflix isn’t completely reinventing the series for its second chapter.
