FX Orders Untitled Snowfall Spinoff from Malcolm Spellman
FX has officially placed a series order for the Untitled Snowfall Spinoff, from acclaimed writer-producer Malcolm Spellman and the creative team behind the hit FX drama Snowfall.
The announcement was made by Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, confirming that the new series will be available to stream exclusively on Hulu.
Set in 1990s Los Angeles, shortly after the events of Snowfall, the drama follows a recovering addict determined to bring West Coast rap into the mainstream — just as gang wars erupt and record labels exploit the emerging hip-hop culture for profit. The series aims to capture the volatile and transformative energy of the era, blending music, crime, and cultural history into a bold new FX original.
Returning Talent and Creative Team
The new Snowfall spinoff marks a reunion of key creative forces from the original series, including Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson, all serving as executive producers alongside Malcolm Spellman. The series is produced by FX Productions.
Spellman — known for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and FX’s acclaimed documentary Hip Hop Uncovered — brings deep insight into the West Coast hip-hop movement. “This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution,” said Grad. “Malcolm Spellman’s understanding of this world and this culture makes him the perfect creative voice for the project.”
A New Cast Anchored by Snowfall Favorites
The upcoming FX drama stars Gail Bean and Isaiah John, both reprising their connection to the Snowfall universe. They are joined by Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III, forming an ensemble cast that bridges Snowfall’s gritty legacy with a fresh, music-driven narrative.
Grad praised the cast, adding, “This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean, and Isaiah John continues to be terrific alongside an exciting new generation of talent.”
Set in the Birth of West Coast Rap
Taking place during one of the most defining decades in Los Angeles history, the Untitled Snowfall Spinoff will explore the intersection of music, identity, and power as hip-hop reshapes American culture. From the rise of underground rap to the corporate interests that tried to control it, the series promises a raw and authentic look at the West Coast rap revolution through FX’s signature cinematic storytelling.
With its deep creative pedigree and a powerhouse cast, the new series is positioned to become FX’s next prestige drama — continuing the legacy of Snowfall while introducing a new rhythm and generation of voices to the screen.
