Furious isn’t finished with Alice Black.
Hulu has officially renewed its critically acclaimed thriller Furious for Season 2, bringing back the drama from creator Elizabeth Meriwether and star and executive producer Emmy Rossum.
The renewal arrives just days before the Season 1 finale premieres Monday, August 31, and follows significant week-to-week audience growth for the Hulu Original. According to Hulu, views for Episode 7 were 40% higher than the series premiere based on one-day viewing, giving the streamer plenty of reason to keep Alice’s story going.
Rossum stars as FBI agent Alice Black, whose increasingly complicated pursuit of Lola Petticrew’s Catherine has driven the first season. The cat-and-mouse thriller has steadily blurred the distinction between investigator and killer as Alice gets closer to understanding both Catherine’s crimes and the reasons behind them. Hulu’s official series materials confirm Petticrew as Catherine alongside Rossum’s Alice.
No Season 2 premiere date or storyline has been announced yet.
Furious Season 2 Is Official
The renewal comes at an interesting moment for Furious.
Season 1 hasn’t even finished.
The eight-episode first season concludes August 31 with Episode 8, “Hart Island,” which promises a major convergence between Alice and Catherine as Catherine’s memories begin revealing a surprising truth.
That means Hulu is committing to another season before viewers know exactly where the Alice/Catherine story leaves either woman.
Creator Elizabeth Meriwether had already expressed hope that Furious could continue beyond its initial case. Before today’s renewal, she talked about the advantage television offers in allowing writers to spend years developing characters and suggested the series could potentially explore other cases involving Alice.
Now she’ll get that opportunity.
Furious Has Been Growing Its Audience
Hulu’s decision isn’t based solely on critical reception.
According to figures released by the streamer, Episode 7 generated 40% more views during its first day than the series premiere did during its first day.
That’s particularly encouraging for a weekly drama.
Instead of peaking when the heavily promoted premiere arrived and gradually losing viewers, Furious has apparently been building an audience as Alice and Catherine’s stories have moved closer together.
The series also launched with a 100% Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score and, according to Hulu, currently stands at 98%.
That combination — strong reviews and an audience that appears to be growing rather than shrinking — makes the early renewal considerably less surprising.
Emmy Rossum And Lola Petticrew Lead Furious
Furious began with Alice and Catherine seemingly occupying opposite sides of a familiar crime story.
Emmy Rossum’s Alice Black is a former NYPD homicide detective attempting to rebuild her career as an FBI agent. Lola Petticrew’s Catherine is the calculating serial killer Alice is determined to catch.
But the deeper Alice gets into the investigation, the less straightforward that division becomes.
Both women are pursuing their own ideas of justice, and Season 1 has repeatedly forced Alice — and viewers — to confront where vengeance ends and justice begins.
The cast also includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Scoot McNairy, with Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang and Steve Way appearing as guest stars.
Meriwether created, wrote and executive produces Furious. Rossum executive produces through Composition 8 alongside Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead and Sam Hoffman. Brian Kirk also executive produces and directed the first two episodes.
The series is produced by 20th Television and Searchlight Television.
What Will Furious Season 2 Be About?
That’s the big question Hulu isn’t answering yet — and probably can’t until after Monday’s finale.
No Season 2 plot details were included with the renewal announcement.
The first season has been built around Alice’s pursuit of Catherine, making the outcome of “Hart Island” particularly important to whatever comes next.
Meriwether’s previous comments suggest Furious doesn’t necessarily have to remain locked into a single case forever. Alice’s work with the FBI creates an obvious mechanism for introducing new investigations while continuing to explore the personal damage and moral ambiguity that have defined her character.
But whether Catherine remains central to that future is something the Season 1 finale may answer.
For now, the important part is official:
There will be a Furious Season 2.
When Will Furious Season 2 Premiere?
Hulu has not announced a premiere date for Furious Season 2.
Production dates, episode count and a complete returning cast have also not yet been revealed.
Furious Season 1 is streaming now on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for U.S. bundle subscribers, with the finale arriving Monday, August 31. The series streams internationally on Disney+.
And unlike Alice’s investigation, viewers can now head into that finale knowing one mystery has already been solved:
Furious is coming back.
