HBO Max is loading up September with new original series, documentaries, major movie additions and a sizable library refresh, with Youth, JAŸ-Z in 8 and A24’s Backrooms among the month’s biggest arrivals.
The new HBO Original comedy Youth premieres September 20 with its first two episodes. Sharon Horgan stars as a 50-year-old divorcee navigating dating, aging parents and a son who probably should have left the nest by now. Sharlene Whyte, Rupert Friend, Aran Murphy and Robbie Gee also star in the eight-episode series.
Movie fans have two particularly notable September arrivals. David Mackenzie’s Fuze, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sam Worthington, debuts September 4, while A24’s record-breaking Backroomsmakes its HBO Max streaming debut September 25.
Backrooms, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell, follows the discovery of a mysterious doorway leading into a seemingly endless network of interconnected rooms. The Kane Parsons film arrives on HBO Max following its record-breaking theatrical run as A24’s highest-grossing movie.
Backrooms makes its HBO Max streaming debut September 25
September’s documentary slate includes the three-part A Killer Story beginning September 10 and JAŸ-Z in 8 on September 18. The latter pairs JAŸ-Z with longtime friend Rick Rubin for an eight-part retrospective examining three decades of his music and career. Two episodes arrive weekly through October 9.
Also coming are Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie on September 22 and Miller Night Football, chronicling Dennis Miller’s unlikely stint in the Monday Night Football booth, on September 29.
