Lionsgate’s Michael continued its impressive theatrical run this weekend, holding onto the top spot at the domestic box office with an estimated $26.1 million. Despite a 31% drop, the Michael Jackson biopic has now surged to an impressive $282.8 million domestic total, proving it remains one of the year’s biggest movie draws.
Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada 2 took second place with $18 million, though the sequel saw a much steeper 57% drop in its second weekend. New thriller Obsession opened in third with a solid $16.1 million debut, while Mortal Kombat II and The Sheep Detectives rounded out the weekend’s top five.
The weekend’s biggest story remains Michael’s continued dominance. With strong audience support and steady holds, the music biopic continues outperforming expectations and looks poised to keep climbing.
For The Devil Wears Prada 2, the sharp second-weekend decline could raise questions about long-term staying power, even with a healthy $175.8 million domestic total already in the bank.
Among newcomers, Focus Features’ Obsession delivered a respectable launch, opening to $16.1 million from 2,615 locations for a strong per-theater average of $6,157.
Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat II continued to slide, dropping 65% in its latest frame as its domestic total reached $62.2 million.
Rounding out the top five, Amazon MGM’s The Sheep Detectives added another $9.3 million, bringing its cumulative domestic haul to just under $30 million.
