SUGAR Season 2 Review: Colin Farrell’s Apple TV+ Mystery Is Better Than Ever

One of television’s most surprising series is back, and somehow SUGAR has become even stronger in its second season.

After the shocking revelation that John Sugar was not entirely human, many viewers wondered whether the Apple TV+ drama could successfully balance its noir detective roots with the science-fiction mythology introduced in Season 1. The answer, at least based on the season premiere and early episodes, is a resounding yes. Rather than running from its divisive twist, SUGAR embraces it and uses it to deepen both its mysteries and its emotional core.

Colin Farrell returns as private investigator John Sugar, but this time he’s more isolated than ever. With many of his extraterrestrial companions gone and his connection to home increasingly uncertain, Sugar finds himself stranded on Earth while taking on a new missing-person case involving a boxer’s missing brother. As expected, the investigation quickly spirals into something much larger, drawing him into Los Angeles’ criminal underworld while simultaneously forcing him to confront questions about identity, belonging, and what it means to be human.

The biggest improvement this season is confidence.

Season 1 spent much of its run hiding its central secret. Season 2 no longer has that burden. The writers are free to explore the consequences of the alien reveal rather than dancing around it, resulting in a story that feels more focused and emotionally grounded. The science-fiction elements remain important, but they no longer overshadow the detective story. Instead, they enhance it.

Farrell continues to be the show’s greatest asset. His performance effortlessly balances classic noir detective cool with vulnerability and loneliness. John Sugar remains one of television’s most likable protagonists, and Farrell’s ability to make even the strangest moments feel believable is a major reason the series works. Whether he’s navigating dangerous criminals, searching for answers about his sister, or wrestling with his increasingly complicated place on Earth, Farrell gives the character a humanity that elevates every scene.

Visually, the series remains stunning. The love letter to classic film noir is still present through stylized cinematography, old Hollywood references, and dreamlike depictions of Los Angeles. Few current shows look quite like SUGAR, and Season 2 continues to lean into its unique aesthetic.

The supporting cast additions also inject new energy into the story. Sasha Calle, Laura Donnelly, Tony Dalton, Jin Ha, and Raymond Lee help expand Sugar’s world while creating fresh dynamics around the central mystery. Their presence prevents the season from feeling like a simple retread of the first year.

If there’s a weakness, it’s that some viewers who never fully embraced the sci-fi twist may still struggle with the show’s genre-blending approach. SUGAR isn’t interested in being a straightforward detective series anymore. It’s a noir mystery, science-fiction drama, character study, and conspiracy thriller all at once. Fortunately, Season 2 demonstrates a much stronger understanding of how those pieces fit together.

Final Verdict

Rather than collapsing under the weight of its ambitious premise, SUGAR uses its second season to refine everything that made the first season intriguing. Colin Farrell remains outstanding, the mysteries are compelling, and the series finally feels comfortable embracing its unique identity. If Season 1 was an experiment, Season 2 feels like the show reaching its full potential.
