Stuart Bloom has failed to save the universe, but apparently he’s doing a pretty good job saving himself from cancellation.
HBO Max has officially renewed Stuart Fails to Save the Universe for Season 2, ensuring that the wonderfully strange Big Bang Theory spinoff will get another opportunity to wreak havoc across the multiverse.
The renewal arrives while Season 1 is still unfolding, with new episodes continuing weekly through the September 24 season finale.
More importantly for the future of the series, HBO Max says Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has become the service’s second-biggest comedy launch ever globally.
That’s quite a start for Stuart.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 2 Is Official
HBO Max announced the renewal Thursday, although there are no Season 2 premiere details yet.
The series comes from Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn and Bill Prady, with Kevin Sussman reprising his Big Bang Theory role as comic book store owner Stuart Bloom.
Season 1 begins with Stuart accidentally breaking a device created by Sheldon and Leonard and triggering a multiverse Armageddon. Fixing reality falls to perhaps the least likely group imaginable: Stuart, his girlfriend Denise, geologist Bert Kibbler and quantum physicist Barry Kripke.
That setup has allowed the series to play with The Big Bang Theory universe without simply attempting to recreate the original sitcom. Alternate realities, familiar characters in unfamiliar forms and a much larger visual canvas have turned Stuart’s seemingly simple mistake into something considerably more ambitious.
And now HBO Max wants another season.
HBO Max Says Stuart Has Found a Global Audience
The early renewal comes with an impressive bit of audience news.
According to HBO Max, Season 1 is the streamer’s second-biggest comedy launch ever globally.
The show has also found early critical support, earning a Certified Fresh designation on Rotten Tomatoes following its debut at San Diego Comic-Con.
For HBO Max, the response suggests the series has managed to do something particularly important for a franchise spinoff: attract existing Big Bang Theory fans without relying entirely on nostalgia.
Amy Gravitt, EVP of HBO Programming and Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series, said the network is pleased with the way the show has connected with both longtime fans and newcomers.
“We’re delighted with how this hilarious, genre-bending show from Chuck, Zak, and Bill has connected with the audience, both devotees of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and new fans alike.”
Gravitt added that HBO Max is looking forward to seeing what worlds the creative team creates for the characters next season.
The Big Bang Theory Universe Keeps Expanding
Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey also celebrated the renewal, calling the series a new approach to one of Warner Bros.’ most successful television franchises.
“Chuck, Zak, and Bill delivered something truly special with STUART FAILS TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE — a completely original take on one of the most beloved franchises of all time.”
Dungey added that Warner Bros. is looking forward to continuing to explore the multiverse in Season 2.
That’s arguably the most interesting thing about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe so far.
Rather than building another conventional sitcom around characters connected to Sheldon Cooper, the creators went considerably bigger — and considerably weirder.
The multiverse premise effectively gives the show permission to revisit Big Bang Theory history without being trapped by it. Familiar characters can return in unexpected forms, established rules can be broken, and the series can operate on a scale that would have been unimaginable during the original show’s apartment-bound early years.
Who Stars in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe?
Kevin Sussman leads the series as Stuart Bloom alongside Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert Kibbler and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke.
All four characters are central to Stuart’s increasingly complicated attempt to repair the damage he caused to reality.
The series is created, written and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn and Bill Prady through Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Kyle Newacheck serves as an executive producer and directs multiple episodes.
No Season 2 cast additions or storyline details have been announced yet.
When Will Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 2 Premiere?
HBO Max has not announced a premiere date for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 2.
For now, Season 1 is still underway, with new episodes streaming weekly on HBO Max and the season finale scheduled for Thursday, September 24.
With the renewal arriving well before the first season finishes, however, Stuart, Denise, Bert and Kripke can continue trying to put the universe back together without fans having to wonder whether their adventure will end with Season 1.
Considering the name of the show, we’re guessing they’ll still have plenty left to fix.
