MobLand Season 2 Episode 8 Recap: Harry Makes the War Personal

MobLand Season 2 Episode 8, “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” takes Harry Da Souza’s most efficient move in the gang war and makes it his least convincing bid for peace. Frankie Cooper let him walk out of the casino. Harry had Frankie’s son killed anyway. By the time he calls to suggest they stop, he has made sure Frankie has a reason to keep going that has nothing to do with who runs North London.

Tom Hardy keeps Harry unnervingly composed as he explains himself to Kevin and Jan. Pierce Brosnan gets the episode’s rawest material as Conrad, while Paddy Considine gives Kevin a moment of tenderness the family can barely tolerate. Helen Mirren and Anson Boon make the same point more nastily in the sauna: in this house, admitting what frightens you usually gives somebody a way to use it.

Harry’s Warning to Michael Was the Trap

The guards at Newgate find Michael Cooper dead. The warning Harry gave him at the end of “Ace of Spades” sounded almost merciful. Harry tells Kevin why it wasn’t. Frankie had influence over the guards on Michael’s regular block, so Harry needed Michael moved. The warning prompted Michael to call his father, and Frankie arranged a transfer to solitary. Harry had paid the custodial manager £200,000 to make sure the hit could happen there. The move Frankie thought would protect his son put Michael exactly where Harry wanted him.

The plan works because Frankie does exactly what Harry expects a father to do. That makes the later offer of a truce hard to take seriously. Harry can say Frankie crossed a line by targeting Jan, but he also knows precisely how to turn a parent’s concern into a weapon. It’s the part of the plan he understands best and the part whose consequences he seems least willing to consider.

Harry and Kevin make Paul think he’s about to be executed, then lock him in a shipping container with Donnie’s body and the equipment to dispose of it. Paul is desperate enough to think VIP Rod Stewart tickets might save him. Emmett J. Scanlan plays the swing from bargaining for his life to stripping down and getting on with the job for laughs. The joke also shows how the crew keeps moving: Jan is still reckoning with killing Donnie, and at the yard his remains are already a job Kevin wants finished and put in cold storage.

Conrad Gives Eddie an Origin Story and Kevin a Threat

The episode opens in Kerry at the funeral of Colm O’Connor, better known as Medusa. His son, Kelly “Mad Dog” O’Connor (Colin Morgan), is out of prison. He pours whisky over the coffin and promises to find the people responsible. Back in the Cotswolds, Eddie learns of Kelly’s release, but his conversation with Conrad turns to a question he’s had longer: why did Kevin and Bella raise him as their son when Conrad is his biological father?

Conrad answers with a story about his own mother. On her deathbed, she told him the abusive man who raised him, Liam, wasn’t his biological father. His father was Finn Burke, who had raped her. Conrad killed Liam, fled and took his new surname from Harrigan’s Slaughterers, the company whose truck driver gave him a lift. Even Eddie’s attempt to defuse the story with a joke about Paddington earns a death threat. Conrad’s point is that Eddie can decide what he does with his life, but there’s a question he never answers: why everyone else got to decide what Eddie knew about it.

Later, Conrad summons Kevin to talk about who might succeed him. That discussion gives way to a confession: he’s seeing the dead, and the visions now come in daylight. Kevin comforts him and goes to fetch brandy. When he comes back, Conrad points a shotgun at him and threatens him if he tells anyone. Brosnan and Considine make the brief moment of trust convincing enough that its loss hurts. Conrad wants his son close enough to help and too frightened to tell anyone why he needs it.

Maeve Gives Eddie a Reason to Fear the Camera

Eddie asks Maeve why she sent him after Medusa when she knew about Kelly. She casts the assignment as a lesson in becoming a gangster. When Eddie tries to shut down what he takes to be her advances, she turns the accusation around and makes him kneel and apologize while she films him. Whether she ever uses the recording, Eddie knows she can. She also keeps pressing Gina to stage a suicide attempt so Harry will take her away from the estate.

Mirren is sharpest when Maeve’s demands are specific. The recorded apology is ugly because she makes Eddie participate in rewriting what just happened. The bigger plan is harder to read. The episode shows how much control Maeve can exert in a room; it still hasn’t made clear what she expects to happen when Mad Dog arrives or Harry takes Gina away.

Harry and Jan Finally Talk About What He Does

Jan meets Harry at a pub, where he tells her he already knows about Donnie. They go home and talk through what she did and what he does for the Harrigans. Harry can explain Michael’s death in the same matter-of-fact way he did to Kevin, but that doesn’t make it easier for Jan to live with killing Donnie. He suggests she take Gina and leave. When Jan asks whether he ever thinks about leaving himself, he offers a smile instead of a promise.

Hardy and Joanne Froggatt let some warmth back into the marriage without making the conversation a reconciliation. Jan gets a direct answer about what Harry is capable of and no clear answer about whether he can stop. After she falls asleep, Harry calls Frankie to offer a truce. Johnny Flynn lets the grief show as Frankie looks through old photos of Michael. Then he reminds Harry that he’s a father, too. The threat carries more weight because Frankie has just let Harry hear what losing a child sounds like.

Ending Explained: Who Is in the Lake, and Why Is Gina in Danger?

Colin Tattersall (Toby Jones) tells the suspended Kavanagh that an informant has pointed him toward the lake at the Harrigan estate. He offers her a lead that could help her get back in with her superiors. The closing shot gives the audience something Kavanagh doesn’t yet have: proof that there’s a body underwater. The episode doesn’t identify it. JoJo and Richie are possible candidates. Eddie skimming stones above the body doesn’t establish that he knows it’s there or that he’s the informant. Kevin driving away in anger in the same sequence keeps the attention on what has just broken inside the house, even as the lake gives the police a reason to look closer.

Mad Dog studies pub footage from the night Medusa died. It puts Eddie and Gina close to his father and gives Kelly a lead, but the scene leaves room for doubt about whom he can identify. Frankie’s parting reminder points to a threat against Gina, too. Neither man has made a move against her by the end of the episode. What makes the danger feel immediate is that Maeve is already trying to get Gina out of the estate, just as Harry and Jan are discussing where she might go.

The hour is stronger when it gives Harry and Jan or Conrad and Kevin the time to finish a conversation than when it rushes to set up another enemy. The lake earns its place because it gives the police thread a concrete lead. The more immediate payoff, though, is the cost of Harry’s victory: he was able to get to Frankie’s son inside a prison, and now he has to reckon with how far a grieving father might go to reach his daughter.

Harry Wins the Move and Loses the Truce

The prison hit changes the war, but the hour cuts deepest when Conrad turns a moment of trust with Kevin into a threat.

Best Element

Harry’s warning to Michael turns out to be the mechanism of the hit.

Standout

Pierce Brosnan makes Conrad’s fear feel real before the shotgun comes out.

What Worked

Harry and Jan’s conversation gives the gang war a cost beyond territory.

What Didn’t

Another revenge plot and a new police lead leave less room for the family scenes that carry the hour.
