IT: Welcome to Derry Renewed for Season 2 — And It’s Heading to 1935

HBO is heading back to Derry.

The network has officially renewed IT: Welcome to Derry for a second season, with Brad Caleb Kane returning as showrunner and Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti continuing as executive producers.

The renewal comes after a strong first-season launch, with HBO saying IT: Welcome to Derry ranked among the top four series premieres globally in HBO Max history. All eight episodes of Season 1 are currently streaming on HBO Max.

Season 2 will also move the story further back in time.

Set in 1935 during the Great Depression, the next chapter will center on the Bradley Gang massacre, following a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammunition and instead encounter something far more horrifying.

The story will continue expanding the mythology established in Stephen King’s IT novel and Andy Muschietti’s feature films IT and IT Chapter Two.

“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”

Clancy Collins White, President of Creative Affairs at Warner Bros. Television, also confirmed that Season 2 will take viewers into a new period in Derry’s history.

“We know IT: Welcome to Derry will continue to captivate viewers with its spine-tingling new journey into the 1930s for Season 2,” White said. “We look forward to bringing fans back to the town of Derry to experience the next chapter and uncover even more of what lies beneath the surface.”

Andy and Barbara Muschietti added: “Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege. The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”

Produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television, IT: Welcome to Derry is based on Stephen King’s IT. Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti executive produce through Double Dream alongside Brad Caleb Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis and Dhana Gilbert.

Kane will serve as showrunner for Season 2.

HBO has not yet announced a premiere date for IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2.
