Dave Bautista is officially picking up the Blades of Chaos.
The Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy star has closed a deal to play Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action God of War series, taking over the role previously held by Ryan Hurst. Bautista had been in negotiations for the part earlier this month, but the casting is now official.
The high-profile change comes after Hurst suffered a serious biceps injury on set in June. Hurst had already begun filming the series as Kratos before the injury ultimately forced Prime Video to move forward with another actor in the lead role.
Bautista now steps into one of the most recognizable roles in modern video games as Prime Video prepares to get its ambitious adaptation back on track.
Dave Bautista Is the New Kratos
Bautista’s casting gives God of War a new leading man after an unusually complicated start to production.
Hurst, known for Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, was announced as Kratos earlier this year and had already transformed himself physically for the role. He also had an existing connection to the franchise, having performed the voice and motion capture for Thor in the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarök.
Production subsequently began in Vancouver, but Hurst’s injury brought filming to a halt and created a significant problem for a series built around Kratos.
Rather than wait through the actor’s lengthy recovery, the production elected to recast the role. Bautista emerged as the frontrunner earlier this month and has now officially signed on.
The casting makes plenty of sense physically, but Bautista has also spent much of his post-WWE career demonstrating that he can bring considerably more than muscle to a role. His performances as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and Glossu Rabban in the Dune movies established his blockbuster credentials, while projects including Blade Runner 2049 and Knock at the Cabin have shown his dramatic range.
That could be particularly important for this version of Kratos.
What Is Prime Video’s God of War About?
Prime Video’s God of War is based on PlayStation’s hugely successful video game franchise, with the television adaptation focusing on the Norse-era story introduced in the acclaimed 2018 game.
The series follows Kratos and his young son Atreus as they set out on a journey to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, from the highest peak. Their seemingly personal mission becomes an increasingly dangerous journey through a world populated by gods and monsters.
While the games contain plenty of massive battles, the later God of War stories are also built around the complicated relationship between Kratos and Atreus. That combination of enormous action and a surprisingly intimate father-son story gives Bautista considerably more to play than simply looking intimidating while swinging an axe.
Callum Vinson plays Atreus in the live-action adaptation. The ensemble also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Teresa Palmer as Sif and other familiar characters from the franchise.
God of War Already Has a Two-Season Order
Amazon isn’t treating God of War as a small experiment.
Prime Video has already given the adaptation a two-season order, with Ronald D. Moore serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Moore’s credits include Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and For All Mankind.
Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are producing the series alongside PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.
The recasting creates additional work for the production because material already filmed with Hurst will have to be addressed as Bautista assumes the role. Production is expected to resume in Vancouver this fall.
Prime Video has not announced a premiere date for God of War.
For a production that suddenly found itself without Kratos, however, landing Dave Bautista is about as substantial a replacement as Prime Video could have made.
And now the God of War has a new face.
