The director and cinematographer Hong Kyung Pyo approved the masters, with Dolby Atmos soundtracks; Criterion specifies HDR for the color UHD presentation.
Supplements include commentary with Bong and Tony Rayns, a conversation with Darcy Paquet, interviews about the filmmaking, a New Korean Cinema program and festival appearances. The release also includes an essay by Amy Taubin.
January 12: Midnight Cowboy
Midnight Cowboy — John Schlesinger’s 1969 New York drama, starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman, comes to UHD with an HDR presentation of a restoration approved by cinematographer Adam Holender. A separate Blu-ray carries the supplements.
The package includes Schlesinger and producer Jerome Hellman’s commentary, Nancy Buirski’s documentary Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of “Midnight Cowboy”, material on screenwriter Waldo Salt, archival interviews and Voight’s screen test.
January 19: Career Girls
Career Girls — Mike Leigh’s 1997 film stars Katrin Cartlidge and Lynda Steadman as former roommates reuniting in London after six years apart. Their weekend together brings old experiences and their changing lives into focus.
The Blu-ray features a new 4K restoration supervised and approved by Leigh, uncompressed stereo audio, selected-scene commentary, a trailer and an essay by Jessica Kiang.
January 19: Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project No. 6
Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project No. 6 collects four restored films across two Blu-rays:
- Mortu nega (1988), directed by Flora Gomes — Guinea-Bissau.
- São Paulo, Incorporated (1965), directed by Luiz Sérgio Person — Brazil.
- The Woman with the Knife (1969), directed by Timité Bassori — Côte d’Ivoire.
- The Stranger and the Fog (1974), directed by Bahram Beyzaie — Iran.
The set features new Scorsese introductions, filmmaker interviews, a documentary about Bassori and the restored short The Return of Amílcar Cabral. All four features receive new 4K restorations overseen by the World Cinema Project in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna.
January 26: Deliverance
Deliverance — John Boorman’s 1972 survival thriller stars Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox as friends whose Georgia canoeing trip turns into an ordeal. A new 4K restoration supervised and approved by Boorman arrives on UHD in Dolby Vision HDR, with an accompanying Blu-ray. A standalone Blu-ray is also listed.
Extras include Boorman’s commentary, a new Mark Harris interview, James Dickey material, making-of documentaries and a cast roundtable, plus an essay by Francine Prose.
January 26: Chocolat
Chocolat — Claire Denis’s 1988 debut explores memories of childhood in colonial Cameroon, with Mireille Perrier and Isaach de Bankolé among the cast.
The Blu-ray presents a new 4K restoration supervised and approved by Denis and cinematographer Robert Alazraki. Supplements include a new Denis interview, a 2011 interview with de Bankolé, Cannes premiere newsreel footage, trailers and an essay by Jennifer Wilson. The edition also features a new English subtitle translation.
Which January 2027 Criterion Releases Are Coming to 4K UHD?
Parasite, Midnight Cowboy and Deliverance receive 4K UHD editions on January 5, January 12 and January 26, respectively. Career Girls, Chocolat and World Cinema Project No. 6 are Blu-ray releases; a 4K restoration describes their source, rather than a UHD disc format.
