With only two episodes remaining, CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION raises both the emotional and psychological stakes in “Requiem.” While the BAU investigates one of the season’s most disturbing UnSubs, Elias Voit finds himself losing what little control he thought he still had as The Fan moves closer to executing his endgame.
The result is one of the series’ best episodes this season—balancing an unforgettable case of the week with meaningful character moments and major developments in the serialized storyline.
A Chilling Case Leads The Hour
This week’s investigation centers on Marvin Bancroft, a mortician whose carefully staged murders quickly become one of the creepiest cases of the season.
Rather than relying on gore, the episode creates tension through atmosphere. The mortuary setting, meticulous preparation of the victims, and unsettling visual style give the hour a distinctly cinematic feel. Director James Takata leans into the horror elements without losing sight of the procedural, creating an episode that feels both familiar and refreshingly different.
Henry’s Celebration Brings Some Much-Needed Heart
Amid the darkness, JJ’s family provides one of the episode’s most touching moments.
The BAU surprises Henry with a celebration, giving the team a rare opportunity to simply enjoy each other’s company. The gathering also reminds viewers that the emotional wounds left by Will’s death are still very much present. JJ shares a heartfelt conversation with Emily, acknowledging just how difficult the past year has been while also appreciating the family she’s built within the BAU.
The episode also rewards longtime fans with several fun callbacks, including mentions of Spencer Reid still offering to help Henry get into Caltech and confirmation that Aaron Hotchner remains safely in witness protection with Jack. They’re brief references, but they reinforce that the larger Criminal Minds family still exists beyond the current team.

Voit Finally Starts To Crack
The larger serialized story takes another major step forward as Voit desperately asks the BAU to check on his family.
His unusual behavior immediately raises suspicions, and Tara quickly realizes something happened during The Fan’s recent visit. It’s eventually confirmed that The Fan showed Voit a photo of his family, making it clear they are now targets.
For perhaps the first time, Voit truly looks powerless. Instead of manipulating the BAU, he’s forced to rely on them, knowing the monster he helped create has become something even he can no longer control.
CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION Season 19 Episode 8 Ending Explained
By the end of “Requiem,” the BAU successfully closes the Bancroft case, but the victory feels almost insignificant compared to the growing threat posed by The Fan.
Voit’s fear confirms what many viewers suspected after last week’s cliffhanger: The Fan isn’t interested in simply copying Voit’s crimes—he wants to destroy every remaining piece of his life. His family has become the next target, leaving Voit with an impossible decision. Does he continue hiding information, or finally trust the BAU with everything he knows?
With only two episodes left this season, the showdown between the BAU, Voit, and The Fan now feels inevitable.
Final Verdict
“Requiem” succeeds on every level. The case of the week is haunting, the cinematography is among the season’s best, and the emotional moments with JJ and the BAU provide a welcome reminder of why these characters remain so beloved after nearly two decades.
Most importantly, the episode finally pushes the season-long mystery into its endgame, setting up what should be an explosive final two episodes.
Rating: 9.5/10
