9-1-1: Nashville Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Dixie Takes the Stage

9-1-1: Nashville Season 2 Episode 4, “In Cold Blood,” gives Dixie Bennings two very different audiences. On a plane full of venomous snakes, she sings to keep a frightened boy calm. At the Ryman, she sings to make sure everyone knows exactly who “Hey, Lady B” is about. LeAnn Rimes makes both moments feel like choices only Dixie would make.

The Pharaoh’s 729 Clue Leads to Dixie’s Flight

Rogue Kelly (Ryan Phillippe) is still trying to make sense of the number 729 when Ryan Hart (Michael Provost) brings him a theory. The materials used in the Pharaoh’s attacks are difficult to obtain legally in the United States. What if someone is smuggling them into the country? Rogue brushes him off, but Ryan is asking a more useful question than the one Rogue has been losing sleep over. The number turns out to be Dixie’s flight; Ryan’s theory may explain how the Pharaoh got the snakes aboard.

Dixie is already irritated about the Milwaukee booking, one of the stops Blythe controls through her contract. Her seatmate, Danny, is traveling alone and knows “Hey, Lady B.” Their conversation becomes much more urgent when a timed device releases snakes aboard the plane and Danny is bitten. One pilot is bitten, too, and panic spreads through the cabin.

Dixie and Cammie Keep Danny Alive

Cammie Raleigh (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) takes Dixie’s 9-1-1 call. With Danny struggling, she talks Dixie through reaching the medical kit for an epinephrine injector. Dixie uses a fire extinguisher to get past the snakes and return to him. Back on the ground, the 113 gets into position with antivenom, but the plane’s nose gear fails to deploy, leaving the remaining pilot to attempt a rough landing.

The episode finds its best moment as the landing approaches. Some passengers pass messages for their families to dispatchers; Dixie holds Danny and sings “Amazing Grace.” Rimes told TV Insider that the scene was initially written around prayer and that showrunner Rashad Raisani suggested she sing the hymn. It gives Dixie something to do for Danny when there’s nothing left she can do about the plane. Both survive, and Blue sees his mother get out safely.

Rogue Tells Don and Ryan What Happened to His Wife

Rogue goes into the cargo hold before the plane is cleared, finds the release device and a Bible page, and shoots a snake that comes at him. He has a lead in Sam Duncan, the agent who signed off on the crate and is now in a coma after a bite. Duncan’s connection to the shipment makes him someone Rogue needs to question. It doesn’t establish whether he knowingly helped the Pharaoh.

The better development is that Rogue apologizes to Ryan and asks him to help. He also tells Ryan and Don what the true crime podcast left out: his obsession with the Staten Island Strangler drove a wedge into his marriage, and the killer later called from his wife’s phone and forced him to listen as she died. That explains why Rogue treats this investigation as something he has to solve by himself. Asking Ryan to stay involved is the first sign this week that he might be willing to work differently.

Dr. Zellner Challenges How Cammie Runs Dispatch

Camryn Manheim arrives as Dr. Marcia Zellner, the new dispatch manager. Her first major crisis gives her a look at how personally Cammie and the team take their calls. Afterward, Zellner warns that emotional involvement can compromise judgment and tells the dispatchers she’ll be assessing whether they’re fit for the job.

The timing gives that warning its sting. We’ve just heard Cammie use her rapport with Dixie to get her through an emergency. Now she has a boss who sees that same investment as a potential liability. That’s a stronger source of tension than simply bringing in a supervisor who wants to change the rules.

Ending Explained: Why Dixie Names Blythe at the Ryman

Danny’s father turns out to be country singer Russell Dickerson, and his gratitude gives Dixie the opportunity to perform at the Ryman Auditorium. Blue urges her to leave Blythe’s name out of it, but Dixie publicly identifies Blythe Hart as the subject of “Hey, Lady B” and sings it anyway, despite the threat of legal action. Blythe watches and acknowledges that Dixie played the moment well. The performance doesn’t free Dixie from her contract, and it puts Blue back between them.

What makes the ending work is that Danny’s love of the song is also how he and Dixie connect before the emergency. By the time she gets to sing it onstage, there’s a reason for her to pick it beyond scoring a point against Blythe. The rivalry itself could use a new direction, though. The episode has just shown how resourceful Dixie can be when someone needs her; there’s more to do with that side of her than send her straight back into the same fight.
