Weekend Box Office: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU Soars To $81.9 Million Debut

Disney scored a major box office victory this weekend as STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU blasted into theaters with an impressive $81.9 million domestic debut, easily claiming the top spot and proving there’s still plenty of big-screen appetite for adventures set in the Star Wars universe. Opening in 4,300 locations with a strong $19,060 per-theater average, the film instantly became the weekend’s dominant release and gave Disney another major franchise win heading into summer movie season.

Holding strong in second place was Focus Features’ OBSESSION, which pulled in $22.4 million from 2,655 theaters, posting a notable 30% increase over the previous weekend and bringing its domestic total to $52.7 million. That kind of second-weekend growth is rare and suggests strong word-of-mouth is helping the thriller connect with audiences.

Meanwhile, MICHAEL continued its impressive theatrical run, landing in third place with $20 million from 3,306 locations. Despite a modest 23% decline, the Michael Jackson biopic has now reached an outstanding $314.2 million domestic total, cementing itself as one of the year’s biggest success stories.

In fourth place, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 added another $12.5 million from 3,300 theaters, slipping 29% but pushing its domestic total to an impressive $196.1 million. With the sequel now closing in on the $200 million milestone, the fashion-fueled follow-up continues to show staying power with audiences.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Amazon MGM’s THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, which earned $8.9 million from 3,207 locations. With only a 6% drop, the family-friendly mystery demonstrated some of the strongest legs of the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $43.5 million.
