Weekend Box Office: BACKROOMS Opens Huge, OBSESSION Surpasses $100 Million

The weekend box office was dominated by BACKROOMS,, as A24’s highly anticipated horror phenomenon debuted with an impressive $81.4 million from 3,442 locations. The breakout hit easily claimed the top spot and delivered one of the strongest openings of the year, proving that original horror remains one of the most reliable genres at the theatrical box office.

In second place, OBSESSION continued its strong run with $26.4 million. The thriller has now earned more than $104.7 million domestically, becoming one of Focus Features’ biggest recent successes. Thanks to strong word-of-mouth and solid audience interest, the film crossed the $100 million milestone in just its latest weekend of release.

Disney’s STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU landed in third place with $25 million. While the film dropped 69% from its opening weekend, it has already generated more than $137.3 million domestically and remains a major player as summer movie season heats up.

Fourth place went to MICHAEL, which added another $11.7 million to its remarkable theatrical run. The Michael Jackson biopic has now earned nearly $340 million domestically, further solidifying its place as one of the year’s biggest box office success stories despite a 43% weekend decline.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Sony’s THE BREADWINNER, which opened with $7.5 million from 3,252 theaters. While the debut was more modest than some recent releases, the film managed to secure a place among the weekend’s biggest earners and will look to build momentum through audience word-of-mouth in the weeks ahead.
