Verizon and BBC AMERICA announced on Thursday (Aug. 16) that the channel is now available in high definition on FiOS TV on Channel 689. BBC AMERICA, an award-winning channel that recently received five Emmy nominations, features the best in thought-provoking British programming and innovative home-grown original series that embrace the intersection of U.S. and U.K. culture.
“We are thrilled that we are now able to make BBC AMERICA HD a part of our FiOS TV lineup,” said Terry Denson, vice president of content strategy and acquisition for Verizon. “Fans of BBC AMERICA will now be able to enjoy their favorite programming in HD via FiOS TV’s 100 percent fiber-optic network to the home.”
Sandy Ashendorf, EVP network distribution, BBC Worldwide, America, said, “We’re excited that FiOS TV customers are now able to enjoy BBC AMERICA programs in HD. With the series premiere of our first original drama, ‘COPPER,’ on Aug. 19 and new seasons of ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘The Hour’ around the corner, the timing for the launch of BBC AMERICA HD on FiOS TV couldn’t be better.”
Found on Channel 689, BBC AMERICA HD is available in FiOS TV’s Extreme HD and Ultimate HD packages. BBC AMERICA is already available in standard definition on FiOS TV Channel 189. Verizon also plans to add BBC AMERICA HD to its FiOS TV Video on Demand offering soon.
The HD launch on FiOS TV comes just in time for the start of BBC AMERICA’s newest series, “COPPER,” from Academy Award-winner Barry Levinson, Emmy-winner Tom Fontana and Academy Award-nominee Will Rokos. The series – a gripping drama set in 1864 New York City and filled with intrigue, corruption and mystery – premieres Sunday (Aug. 19) at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Other popular shows include “Doctor Who,” “Top Gear,” “The Graham Norton Show” and Dramaville’s acclaimed miniseries “The Hour” and “Luther,” for which Idris Elba won a Golden Globe.
BBC AMERICA HD joins FiOS TV’s broad collection of programming, which offers more than 560 all-digital channels, including more than 145 HD channels, and 35,000 monthly video-on-demand titles.
