Tracker Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: “Purification” Turns a Kind Act Into a Desperate Rescue

Tracker Season 4 Episode 4, “Purification,” gives Colter Shaw a missing-person case with an especially troubling discovery at its center. Justin Hartley leads an hour in which a young woman’s decision to help a frightened teenager puts both their lives in danger.

Fiona Rene’s Reenie Greene, Chris Lee’s Randy and Cassady McClincy Zhang’s Mel help connect the evidence, while Gillian Bolt’s Jenna Nova offers Colter a reason to make plans outside work. The case is grim, but its strongest element is the compassion that survives it.

SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers follow for Tracker Season 4 Episode 4, “Purification,” including the kidnappers’ identities, the rescue and the ending.

Nicole’s Disappearance Starts With a Broken Promise

Roy Dunning hires Colter after his daughter Nicole misses his birthday dinner. An adult being out of contact might not initially alarm the police, but Roy knows this is unlike her. The $8,000 assignment takes Colter to Danville, Utah.

Troy Winbush plays Roy, and Iman Benson plays Nicole. Their connection makes the missed dinner a useful starting point: a small departure from someone’s habits can mean more to a parent than it does on a missing-person report.

Nicole recently learned that Stephen Jones (Kanoa Goo), the man she was seeing, has a wife and child. Stephen initially dodges Colter’s questions, but their meeting in a park supplies a lead. He is dishonest about his relationship; he is not the person who abducted her.

Hartley gets some welcome room for Colter’s dry impatience here. Stephen’s evasions are an obstacle Colter can confront directly before the case reveals something much worse.

The Teenager Was Asking Nicole for Help

The frightened boy Nicole encounters is Luca Diaz’s Jason Williams. Rather than threatening her, he needs protection. Nicole takes him to a gas station and tries to get assistance, only for a man driving a vehicle with a camper to arrive, assault an employee and take them both.

Colter spots Nicole’s damaged car being towed from the station. It is a convenient break: he happens across the vehicle that gives his investigation direction. Once he has it, though, the episode does a better job of building connections through the witness account, a club logo and a hospital-issued hoodie.

The important reversal is Nicole’s role. Her disappearance begins with an attempt to keep someone else safe. She remains a participant in the story, with decisions to make, rather than simply waiting at the far end of Colter’s search.

Tate Montgomery’s Name Conceals a Family Secret

A Tiger Club connection leads Colter to an address associated with Tate Montgomery. Inside the house, he finds evidence of confinement and abuse, signs of a fire and a body. The real Montgomery has been dead for some time.

The man using his identity is Montgomery’s stepson, Elias Williams, who has continued collecting his Social Security payments. Elias is also Jason’s father. Brian Stepanek plays Elias, with Sarah Chaney as Jason’s mother, Cheryl.

Jason’s parents have used their religious beliefs to justify brutal treatment they call purification. The hospital clothing helps connect him to an earlier medical emergency involving bleach. An abuse investigation had been opened, but the family could not be located. Jason eventually used a fire to create an opportunity to escape.

These discoveries explain his terror without requiring the episode to dwell quite so heavily on its evidence of suffering. The basement and recordings establish the danger quickly. Repeated emphasis on the cruelty adds less than the scenes that show Jason struggling to trust another person.

Nicole Creates Their Chance to Escape

Randy tracks Elias’ phone to a storage facility. Colter nearly reaches him there, but Cheryl drives in and helps him get away. Nicole and Jason remain captive as the couple argue about what to do with the woman who witnessed their abuse.

Nicole refuses to wait for that decision. She frees her hands and uses her restraints against Cheryl, forcing the vehicle into a crash. She and Jason escape into the woods, with Elias following.

Jason’s injury makes running difficult. Even so, he tries to draw his father away from Nicole. She then intervenes when Elias reaches him, and Colter arrives to stop the attacker.

The sequence works because the rescue has several contributors. Nicole creates the opening, Jason tries to protect her, and Colter prevents Elias from taking control again. The victims’ choices matter to the outcome, giving the final pursuit more substance than another demonstration of Colter’s fighting skills.

Jason Has Somewhere Safer to Go

Nicole reunites with her father at the hospital, and Jason receives care. Reenie confirms that his parents have been arrested and that an aunt in Texas can take him in.

The placement provides a hopeful destination without settling everything Jason has endured. Safety is an essential beginning, but the episode’s emotional resolution comes from seeing that people outside his home will choose to help him.

The wider team also contributes meaningfully to that outcome. Mel recognizes the hospital clothing, Randy follows the information trail, and Reenie helps establish what happened to Jason and what can happen next. Their involvement gives Colter’s work a stronger foundation.

Reenie Finds an Office, and Jenna Brings a Dinner Invitation

Reenie’s prolonged office search finally moves forward with a lease on an old bank building, vault included. Mel has contacts who can help with renovations. It is useful progress, although the subplot now needs to produce something beyond another conversation about premises.

Jenna visits Colter to deliver the bench seat for his father’s truck. Their conversation leads to plans for dinner at a nearby diner. After a case built around danger and mistrust, the quieter encounter allows Hartley to play Colter’s less assured side.

There is appeal in watching someone so decisive on a search become slightly awkward about company. Jenna still needs interests and a life beyond the parts business and her attraction to Colter, but making time for dinner is a believable step. The episode leaves the date itself offscreen.

Final Verdict

“Purification” is a strong, disturbing hour whose best choice is allowing Nicole and Jason to help save each other. The investigation relies on an early coincidence, and the imagery sometimes presses harder than necessary. Its emotional structure is more persuasive: kindness creates a connection that abuse has failed to extinguish. Colter’s tentative plans with Jenna offer a gentle finish, while Reenie’s new lease should free her for more substantial stories.
