HBO Orders The Spread, a Miami Drama Starring Javier Bardem and Directed by Matthew Vaughn

HBO is heading to Miami for The Spread, a newly ordered original drama series starring and executive produced by Academy Award winner Javier Bardem. The series comes from writer-producers Bill Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri, with Matthew Vaughn set to direct and executive produce.

The project has assembled a notably heavyweight creative team before revealing a premiere date, further casting or even the name of Bardem’s character. Dubuque, whose credits include Ozark and His & Hers, will write and executive produce with Sansiveri, while Vaughn brings his kinetic visual sensibility after films including Layer Cake and the Kingsman franchise. Bardem will also executive produce.

Miami Becomes Wall Street South

The Spread is set in a Miami where paradise is becoming power: “Wall Street South.” The series will follow a world of industry titans, elite hedge funds, enormous wealth and ruthless competition, with nightlife, sex and fun all operating at an industrial scale.

At the center is a visionary billionaire who gathers the brilliant, the hungry and the dangerous, then turns their ambitions loose on the markets that power America. His goal is bigger than a successful deal or a headline-making launch: he wants to move the center of economic gravity to Miami, and to decide how long the party lasts.

That premise gives HBO a particularly vivid setting for a power drama. Miami’s sun-soaked luxury is part of the point, but so is the pressure beneath it—the kind of environment where money, access and appetite can become indistinguishable. The logline suggests a series interested in the people who thrive in that collision, and the price of trying to control it.

An A-List Team Behind the New HBO Drama

Bardem brings a formidable screen presence to the leading role, with an acclaimed career that ranges from No Country for Old Men to Being the Ricardos, Dune and Skyfall. He also recently led Apple TV’s Cape Fear, which Seat42F recapped throughout its full season. HBO has not yet released character details, but attaching Bardem as both star and executive producer immediately gives The Spread a clear center of gravity.

Vaughn will direct as well as executive produce. His work has consistently paired heightened genre energy with sharp, often darkly funny stories about institutions, power and people operating just outside the rules. That makes him an intriguing fit for a series positioned between finance-world ambition and Miami excess.

“Having long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida,” HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi said in announcing the order, the network is excited to explore the “gilded chaos” of Miami with the project’s creative team. FIFTH SEASON’s Noah Greenshner similarly described the series as a story of power and ambition built around the city’s vivid, glamorous backdrop.

The Spread is a co-production with FIFTH SEASON TV Studio. Brad Weston executive produces for Makeready, alongside Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom for Topic Studios. No production start date, episode count or release window has been announced.
