The Super Bowl is heading into the Star Wars galaxy. ESPN, Lucasfilm, Disney and the NFL have announced Star Wars Funday Football, a real-time animated presentation of Super Bowl LXI arriving Sunday, February 14, 2027, on Disney+, the ESPN App, Disney Channel and Disney XD.
Anthony Daniels will return to voice C-3PO, joining characters from across the franchise as the AFC and NFC champions become animated players. The presentation will be the first animated alternate telecast of a Super Bowl and part of ESPN’s first-ever production of the championship game.

Every Play Recreated Inside the Star Wars Galaxy
According to ESPN’s announcement, the alternate presentation will recreate every play in real time, turning the athletes into animated avatars. Star Wars characters will step into the action during key moments, with Easter eggs appearing throughout the game.
ESPN will use data visualization technology from Sony’s Beyond Sports, combining the NFL’s Next Gen Stats player tracking with optical tracking from Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations. That information allows the live game to be translated into animation as it happens.
The setting, additional characters and animated broadcast team remain to be revealed. Daniels is the first announced voice performer, returning to a role he originated in the 1977 film.
Live and On-Demand Availability Around the World
The animated telecast will have expanded live availability across international markets, including Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand and Canada through TSN+, as well as territories in Europe, Africa and Asia.
On-demand availability on Disney+ will follow shortly after the live presentation in those markets and additional regions, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and South Korea. Combined live and on-demand availability will extend to more than 155 markets. That total does not mean every market will carry the game live.
A Super Bowl First for Funday Football
Star Wars Funday Football is the fourth NFL animated alternate telecast from ESPN, Disney and the league. It follows Toy Story Funday Football in October 2023, The Simpsons Funday Football in December 2024 and Monsters Funday Football in December 2025.
The announcement also connects the game to the franchise’s 50th anniversary. A newly restored version of the original Star Wars will return to theaters Friday, February 19, 2027, five days after the Super Bowl.
Star Wars Highlights Begin This Week on Disney+
The partnership starts well before February. Beginning Tuesday, October 20, SC+, ESPN’s daily SportsCenter show on Disney+, will feature Star Wars-themed “Hyperspace Highlights” drawn from Monday Night Football.
Starting Monday, October 26, SC+ will also feature an animated Darth Vader interviewing a player taking part in that evening’s Monday Night Football game.
More Ways to Watch Super Bowl LXI
The other announced alternate presentations include Super Bowl LXI with Peyton and Eli on ESPN2, Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show on ESPNU and Playbook with Next Gen Stats on NFL Network.
Star Wars Funday Football airs and streams live Sunday, February 14, 2027. U.S. viewers can watch on Disney+, the ESPN App, Disney Channel or Disney XD. ESPN will announce more details about the animated presentation as the game approaches.
