Sophie & Roommates

Tonight on ABC Family, after the mediocre season finale of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, two new comedies premiere at 9 and 9:30.

Up first is Roommates.  First and foremost, this is the decidedly better of the two (I say that having only seen 9 minutes of this one).  A story of a guy named Mark who meets his old high school crush, and through a series of misadventures, finds himself as her new roommate.  In love with her, at odds with one of the other roommates (Hope, played by Tamera Mowry, the only “known” actor in the bunch), and struggling to understand the humor of the fourth, we follow the lives of these folks as they deal with their mid-twenties. From what I saw, if the characters are toned down a bit, this show will become a nice companion show for Greek.

Sophie is next, and I have trouble calling it a “comedy.”  Sophie from the title is a woman who is about 95 months pregnant, in love with her boyfriend, best friends with a stereotypical gay man and an equally stereotypical blonde woman. She also has a fantastic job.  Cut to her meeting with a mysterious shaman who tells her that the next year of her life, and I’m paraphrasing here, is going to suck.  That premonition eventually comes true, in a variety of ways, the least of which include her perfect boyfriend cheating on her with her perfect best friend.  The show is forced, and painful to watch, and sadly for ABC Family, nothing can make me tune into the second episode.

Give Roommates a shot, but do yourself a favor, and check out before Sophie!
