The Wrong Arm of the Law

In this British comic gem of the ’60s, the mighty Peter Sellers (The Ladykillers, The Pink Panther) stars as Pearly Gates, the cockney kingpin of London’s most efficient gang of thieves, organizing spectacular robberies from behind the front of a haute-couture dress salon. Everything goes well until the police start appearing after every job to confiscate the loot. The cunning Pearly realizes there’s a traitor amongst his crew, and no one is above suspicion—not even his fashion model girlfriend Valerie (Nanette Newman, The Raging Moon). Much laughter and lunacy ensue! The smashing cast also features Bernard Cribbins (The Railway Children) as gangster “Nervous” O’Toole and Lionel Jeffries (Two Way Stretch) as Inspector Fred “Nosy” Parker.
Dear Ruth

Joan Caulfield (Blue Skies) and William Holden (Sabrina) star in this delightful romantic comedy based on the Broadway play by Norman Krasna (White Christmas, Indiscreet). Teenager Miriam Wilkins (Mona Freeman) is an energetic activist during World War II, involving her family in causes without first gaining their consent. Her parents (Edward Arnold and Mary Phillips) are puzzled when young Lieutenant Bill Seacroft (Holden), on leave from the Italian front, appears at their home asking for their 22-year-old daughter Ruth (Caulfield). Unbeknownst to all, Miriam has been writing letters to Bill and signing Ruth’s name as part of a program to keep up soldiers’ morale. Although Ruth has just gotten engaged to her co-worker (Billy De Wolfe), she agrees to see Bill and pretend she wrote the letters. Holden and Caulfield light up the screen in this box-office hit of 1947 that “bubbles and sparkles its way into your heart” (The New York Times)!

Night of the Juggler

The grit and intensity of late-1970s New York City is depicted in stark detail in this relentlessly action-packed cult classic. Twenty-four hours of nerve-jangling tension and suspense begin when a twisted psychotic (Cliff Gorman, Cops and Robbers, All That Jazz) kidnaps a teenaged girl, mistaking her for the daughter of a wealthy real estate developer. Her determined father (James Brolin, The Car, The Amityville Horror), a hard-hitting ex-cop, doggedly pursues them through New York’s seamy streets, decaying, burned-out Bronx tenements, and the grimy subterranean corridors beneath the city itself. Based on the novel by William P. McGivern (The Big Heat, Odds Against Tomorrow) and co-starring Richard S. Castellano (The Godfather), Julie Carmen (In the Mouth of Madness), Dan Hedaya (Blood Simple) and Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride), Night of the Juggler is a thrilling example of no-holds-barred, pure adrenaline-fueled filmmaking. The film’s original director Sidney J. Furie (The Ipcress File, The Appaloosa) was replaced by Robert Butler (Up the Creek, Turbulence) a few weeks into production.

Walter Connolly (It Happened One Night) stars as Father Brown, a humble Roman Catholic priest who doubles as a sleuth, using his intuition and keen understanding of human nature to solve mysteries and crimes. Paul Lukas (By Candlelight, The Lady Vanishes) plays the notorious jewel thief Flambeau, who intends to steal precious diamonds from a cross in Father Brown’s church as a gift for the lovely Evelyn Fischer (Gertrude Michael, Murder at the Vanities). The crime-busting clergyman Father Brown fights to retain the cross, and also to reform and redeem the soul of the elusive troublemaker Flambeau! This charming comedy-mystery is based on “The Blue Cross,” the inaugural story in G.K. Chesterton’s celebrated Father Brown detective series.

French Without Tears

From celebrated playwright Terence Rattigan and director Anthony Asquith (The Winslow Boy, The Browning Version) comes this effervescent comedy-of-manners starring the ever-charming Ray Milland (Arise My Love) and Ellen Drew (Christmas in July). Adapted from Rattigan’s 1936 play (which made Rex Harrison a star), this 1940 film version begins when Diana (Drew), the sister of a young Englishman studying at a language “cramming” school in the south of France, arrives in town to flirt with all of her brothers’ schoolmates. Deliciously entertaining, French Without Tears is a sly satire on the “civilized” romantic entanglements of the upper-crust milieu.
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas documents in rousing song and dance, a new Texas legend, which now joins the Alamo as a historical institution, immortalized in story, song, book, play and movie. The demise of the real-life Chicken Ranch inspired the hit stage musical, and now this boisterous big-screen adaptation headed by superstar Burt Reynolds (Smokey and the Bandit) as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd and red-hot country legend Dolly Parton (9 to 5) as the Chicken Ranch’s proprietress, Miss Mona.
