Screener Girl Checks Out The Series Premiere Of Gary Unmarried

Gary UnmarriedBy Far The Best New Comedy Of The Season

Gary Unmarried

The comedy everyone should be watching on CBS this fall is Jay Mohr’s Gary Unmarried.  Gary (played by Mohr) meets a woman named Vanessa (Jaime King) while painting her condo (he owns a painting company) and it is lust at first sight.  The story unfolds as he forgets to mention he has recently gone through a divorce and that he has two kids from that marriage.

Jay Mohr is likeable and at ease with being a dad, and an ex-husband, and a man scared of commitment to a new woman.  He has great chemistry with everyone on screen, including his marriage counselor, played by one of my favorites, Ed Begley, Jr.   Gary’s ex-wife is played by the incomparable (however notoriously show-killing) Paula Marshall.  She and Mohr play off each other like they’ve been together for years.  And the kids on the show are great finds.  Louise (Kathryn Newton) has an affinity for Che Guevara and Ghandi and she can’t wait to hang up her newest picture of Al Gore.  Tom (Ryan Malgarini) has girl issues, including when he should “tap that” and what “tapping that” actually means.  I thought some of the best stuff came from Tom and Gary in this first episode.

The only issue I have with the show is that I don’t know if Jaime King is necessarily a comedic actress.  I understand that it can’t be laugh a minute, but I worry that she might be forcing it too much.  Other than that, this is by far the best new comedy of the season (having not seen Kath and Kim yet, but betting this is better) and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next few episodes!

Tune into CBS tonight at 8:30PM EST for the series premiere of Gary Unmarried.
