This Show Is The Real Deal
The long vacation from Coeur d’Coeur, the mythical, magical, beautiful town that brought us Ned the Piemaker and a girl named Chuck, is finally over! Pushing Daisies returns Wednesday with another ridiculously good episode of one of the best shows on TV.
For those of you who didn’t tune in to last season’s 9 brilliant episodes, shame on you, and here is what you missed.
Ned has the power to bring things back to life with one touch. If that person / thing stays alive for more than 1 minute, people in the vicinity will die. If Ned ever touches that person who he first touched for a second time, they will die, forever. Ned was in love with Chuck when they were little. In keeping his mother alive for longer than he should have, he inadvertently killed Chuck’s dad (Chuck‘s mom died in childbirth and Ned‘s dad is a jerk). Cut to the present time, where Chuck was killed on a cruise, and Ned brought her back to life. She remains living (in her place, a dirty funeral parlor owner died), and she and Ned, though smitten, can never touch. Ned’s abilities come in handy when he’s helping PI Emerson Cod solve some murders for cash. Emerson doesn’t like Chuck much (calling her “Dead Girl”) because she gets in the way. Rounding out the foursome is perky Olive Snook, the waitress at The Pie Hole. Chuck’s aunts Lily and Vivian are also along for the ride, not knowing that their niece is actually back among the living. When we last left our friends, Lily had revealed to Olive (while under the spell of some mood altering drugs) that she was actually Charlotte “Chuck” Charles’ mother.
The season premiere is brilliant, and shiny, and wonderful. Ned and Chuck are as darling as ever, as they continue to avoid touching, but at the same time, fall a little bit more in love with each other as they go. With Olive gone, Chuck makes the daring decision to move out of Ned’s place for a little bit. The mystery murder of the week is about the local honey manufacturer and the death of the newest face of the company. Filled with a dream guest cast – Missi Pyle, French Stewart, Autumn Reeser, Peter Cambor, Diana Scarwid – this is one of those shows that you just don’t want to end. While Emerson, Ned, and Chuck work on that, Olive has disappeared (with a little help from Lily) to a nunnery so she can keep the secret of Chuck’s maternity to herself. The dialogue is whip smart, the feelings are real, and the direction on this show is fantastic. Plus, shirtless!Ned, so really, we all win!
Having had the opportunity to see the first three episodes of Season 2, I can absolutely swear to you that the first 9 episodes were not a fluke – this show is the real deal, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen on TV. Be sure to check it out – you won’t be sorry!
