When we last left our gang, Ted had proposed to Stella, Marshall was still jobless, and Barney was in love with Robin but unable to say anything. The first half hour deals with those stories and more. I don't want to give anything away because it's much better to watch and see, but there are some really great laugh out loud moments and Neil Patrick Harris continues to show just how awesome he is, playing sweet, in love, and smarmy all at once. Guest star Sarah Chalke is just so good. I'm always amazed at how overlooked she has been for her work on Scrubs, and she just continues to remind me how great a comedienne she is.
My only complaint – because you know by now that there's always one – they continue to underuse Cobie Smulders. I'm not sure if she just doesn't have the comic timing that the rest of the gang has, but she's given the lame duck one liners that do nothing to add to the story. Now that Barney is in love with her, maybe we'll start to see her actually play a pivotal role, versus the wacky sidekick thing she's been doing.
Easily one of the best shows on TV, the season premiere does not disappoint!
