Sons of Anarchy on FX is my favorite new show of the season. That’s a bold statement, but I was drawn in from minute one and couldn’t turn away until the first two episodes they sent to screen were finished. Created by Kurt Sutter (writer for The Shield, including this season’s amazing premiere), SOA is the story of the men, and women who love the men, of SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original). Charlie Hunnam (from Undeclared) stars as Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller, the vice president of SAMCRO and stepson to club President Clay Morrow (played by Ron Perlman). The club was started back in the day by Clay and Jax’s dad John. In those days, John was married to Gemma (Katey Sagal); John died and now Gemma is married to Clay.
Jax finds a document that his father was writing about how he didn’t like the wayward path the SAMCRO guys were taking – a life of crime, drugs, guns, you name it if it’s bad for you. Gang wars and a blown up weapons cache is the least of their problems. Combined with the fact that his pregnant ex-wife (the gritty Drea DeMatteo) has overdosed and caused their child to be born prematurely, and Jax is a little conflicted. Add into the equation his old love Tara (played by Maggie Siff), is now a doctor who is taking care of the baby, and you have a frakked up love triangle for the ages.
The stories are intricate; the acting is gritty, raw, dangerous, and gorgeous all in one. I have never seen Katey Sagal so amazing. She is a caring mother and terrifying bitch all in one. And don’t forget about Hellboy himself; with just one look, Ron Perlman can blow your mind. The whole cast is strong and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Sure, it’s dark, but there’s something for everyone – love triangles, murder, guns, drugs, sex, humor, honesty. This show has the ability to take the reins from the soon-to-be-over The Shield and carry the dirty/shocking torch for the network.
