ABC’s Scandal continued its fourth season with Season 4 Episode 6 (S4E6 / 4×06), “An Innocent Man.” Originally airing on October 30, 2014, the episode finds Olivia Pope summoned to meet Leonard Carnehan, a convicted assassin who has spent decades in prison for attempting to kill a former president. Insisting he was framed, Leonard asks Olivia to prove his innocence and uncover the truth behind a crime that has defined his entire life.
Written by Zahir McGhee and directed by Jeannot Szwarc, “An Innocent Man” balances Olivia’s latest case with several increasingly dangerous developments inside the White House. Mellie becomes fascinated by former First Lady Bitsy Cooper, whose candid stories about life in the public eye strike unexpectedly close to home, while Elizabeth North continues working to gain influence within the administration. Fitz also makes a bold move that shifts the balance of power surrounding Jake and Rowan.
The episode is significant because it gives Mellie a renewed sense of purpose after one of the darkest periods of her life, while Olivia’s investigation reinforces the series’ recurring questions about justice, political mythology, and the powerful people who control the official version of history. It also advances the season’s larger B613 conflict as Fitz begins taking more direct action against Command.
