Netflix Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary With USA 250 Collection And THE AMERICAN EXPERIMENT

Netflix is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with the launch of USA 250, a new collection of films, series, and documentaries honoring America’s history, culture, and enduring spirit.

Leading the celebration is THE AMERICAN EXPERIMENT, a sweeping five-part documentary series that debuted June 24. Directed by Brian Knappenberger and executive-produced by Tom HanksGary GoetzmanSarah Huisenga, and Knappenberger, the series explores how the ideals of America’s founders helped shape the nation while examining the people, events, and ideas that continue to define the country today.

The documentary features voices from across the political spectrum, including former vice presidents, cabinet officials, current and former members of Congress, a former Supreme Court justice, historians, tribal chiefs, military experts, and civic leaders.

The series also brings American history to life through ambitious reenactments. Martin Sheen voices George Washington, while more than 30 Americans — including firefighters, paramedics, police officers, military officers, historians, civil servants, and poet laureates — lend their voices to additional historical recreations. Production traveled across the country, filming in Arizona, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

To create the series’ large-scale historical sequences, the production worked with Eyeline Studios on visual effects that helped recreate major ground and naval battles, detailed towns, and aerial views rarely seen in documentary storytelling. The result is a series designed to make America’s founding history feel immediate, cinematic, and relevant.

Ahead of its Netflix debut, THE AMERICAN EXPERIMENT was previewed during a special screening at the Burke Theater at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. Presented in partnership with America250, the event included guests from America250, the DC America 250 Commission, the Military Women’s Memorial, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Archives, and the White House Historical Association. The screening was followed by a Q&A with Knappenberger, Yale historian Joanne Freeman, and moderator Sara Georgini.

As part of the celebration, Netflix has also launched the USA 250 collection, featuring curated rows designed to showcase the many ways people live, experience, and imagine America today. In addition to the main collection, Netflix is highlighting 11 sub-collections, including The American PlaybookThe American SongbookThe United States of FoodHigh Noon USALights, Camera, America! From Sea to Shining Sea, and 250 Years of America.
