Love Guru Bluray Review

 

Seat42f Says: Remember when Mike Myers use to do good movies? It’s been 15 years since “So I Married An Axe Murderer” and “Wayne’s World” and over 10 years since the original “Austin Powers.” For the past 10 years those of us who loved his SNL skits and early movies have been waiting for the comedian to strike gold again and remind us all of how funny he can be in the right movie. 

There is good news and bad news with his latest release, “The Love Guru,” on Blu-ray about the Guru Pitka and his return to the states to cash in on the self-help boon. The bad news is “The Love Guru” does not strike gold and is not the movie we have been waiting for. It plays like a never-ending SNL skit with the same jokes being beaten to death. As a viewer it was easy to feel manipulated knowing that Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake were added as mere window dressing to avert the mind from the poorly written script lacking any kind of watchable plot.

HOWEVER! I did say there was good news.  For diehard fans of Myer’s the Blu-ray disc packs a ton of extras, some of which are much better than the movie. Also, the film looks amazing. The creative team did a fantastic job with the video transfer and although the movie didn’t wow me it sure looks fantastic in 1080p 2.39:1 widescreen format.  The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless sound mix offers up a standard comedy mix.

Bottom line. Longtime fans of all the Mike Myer’s movies will want to add this to their collection. Those of us yearning for the days when Myer’s made us laugh will pass this over for a random rental or in-flight movie viewing only.
