Golden Axe is back — this time as an animated comedy.
Paramount+ has released the first trailer and first-look photos for Golden Axe, the new 10-episode animated series based on SEGA’s iconic 1989 arcade game. All 10 episodes will premiere Wednesday, September 16 exclusively on Paramount+.
The series reunites legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead for another quest to save Yuria from Death Adder, the seemingly unkillable giant who once again refuses to stay dead.
Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre and Carl Tart lead the voice cast, with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites co-creator Mike McMahan among the creative team bringing SEGA’s fantasy world to television.
What Is the Golden Axe Animated Series About?
Golden Axe is designed as a comedic homage to the original side-scrolling action game that first hit arcades in 1989.
Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead reunite when Death Adder once again threatens Yuria, forcing the veteran warriors into another adventure to stop their longtime enemy.
Their quest becomes considerably more complicated when they’re joined by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and spectacularly underprepared would-be adventurer whose enthusiasm for becoming a hero far exceeds his actual abilities.
Forced to work together despite their very different personalities, the group sets out to defeat Death Adder once and for all.
For longtime SEGA fans, the setup brings several of the game’s most recognizable characters and locations into the new series while leaning heavily into comedy rather than simply recreating the arcade game’s story.
Who Voices Golden Axe?
Matthew Rhys voices Gilius Thunderhead, the famously axe-wielding battle dwarf. The animated version of Gilius is described as grumpy, unhygienic and carrying a sizable chip on his shoulder.
Danny Pudi voices newcomer Hampton Squib, a naive first-time adventurer who has dreamed about going on a heroic quest his entire life despite being woefully unprepared for one.
Lisa Gilroy stars as Tyris Flare, the formidable battle sorceress whose abilities in combat are matched by her sharp wit.
Liam McIntyre voices Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honor and a considerably sweeter personality than his imposing appearance might suggest.
Carl Tart rounds out the announced main voice cast as Chronos “Evil” Lait, an exceedingly cheesy humanoid panther.
Golden Axe Comes From Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler
The series was co-created by Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler, who also co-wrote the first episode and serve as executive producers. Chandler serves as showrunner.
McMahan brings considerable animation and comedy experience to the project, including his work on Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites.
Golden Axe is produced by CBS‘ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm, Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.
SEGA’s Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi and Toru Nakahara executive produce alongside Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Toby Ascher of Original Film.
Titmouse serves as the animation studio, with Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina also serving as executive producers.

The first Golden Axe trailer offers an extended look at Paramount+’s comedic take on the classic SEGA franchise, introducing the animated versions of Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead alongside the decidedly less experienced Hampton Squib.
The footage also gives fans their first taste of the show’s combination of fantasy action, familiar Golden Axe mythology and irreverent comedy.

All 10 episodes of Golden Axe premiere Wednesday, September 16 exclusively on Paramount+.
The complete-season release means fans will be able to binge the entire animated adventure beginning on premiere day rather than waiting for weekly episodes.
