Showtime’s Dexter moved into its final stretch with Season 8 Episode 11 (S8E11 / 8×11), “Monkey in a Box.”Originally airing on September 15, 2013, the penultimate episode finds Dexter Morgan preparing to leave Miami behind with Hannah and Harrison. Before he can begin that new life, however, he remains determined to stop Oliver Saxon once and for all, forcing him to choose between escaping his past and confronting one final threat.
Written by Tim Schlattmann and Wendy West and directed by Ernest Dickerson, “Monkey in a Box” places Dexter at a major personal crossroads. As he says goodbye to Miami Metro and begins letting go of the life he has built, his pursuit of Saxon leads to an unexpected realization about his Dark Passenger. Rather than simply functioning as setup for the series finale, the episode explores whether Dexter may finally be capable of choosing his family over the compulsion that has controlled him for years.
The episode is especially significant for the evolving relationship between Dexter and Debra, whose bond begins to recover after a season filled with anger, guilt, and betrayal. Their quieter scenes give Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter some of the episode’s strongest material, even as Saxon’s continued presence pushes the story toward devastating consequences.
