ABC’s Castle delivered one of its most unforgettable storylines with Season 5 Episode 15 (S5E15 / 5×15), “Target.”Originally airing on February 18, 2013, the episode begins as what appears to be a routine murder investigation before taking a shocking turn that changes everything for Richard Castle. When the case uncovers a sophisticated kidnapping plot targeting the daughter of a wealthy businessman, Castle and Beckett soon realize that someone much closer to home is also in grave danger. What follows launches one of the series’ most acclaimed two-part events.
Written by David Amann and directed by Bill Roe, “Target” raises the emotional stakes by forcing Castle to confront every parent’s worst nightmare. As the investigation expands beyond New York, Castle’s normally lighthearted personality gives way to a darker, more determined side, while Beckett and the NYPD race against time alongside FBI Agent Harris to stop an international kidnapping ring. The episode masterfully blends suspense, action, and emotional drama, setting up the explosive conclusion in the following week’s episode, “Hunt.”
Led by Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, the episode also features standout appearances from Dylan Walsh as FBI Agent Harris, along with Bernard White, Karen David, and Katherine Kamhi. Frequently ranked among the best episodes of the series, “Target” showcases Castle at his most vulnerable and determined, making it an essential chapter in the show’s eight-season run.
