The ton will return in 2027 for a new love story as Bridgerton Season 5 puts Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling at the center of the Netflix drama.
Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza lead the upcoming eight-episode season, which is currently in production outside London. Season 5 will pick up two years after the death of Francesca’s husband, John Stirling, as both women attempt to move forward from a loss that affected them in very different ways.
Netflix’s latest Season 5 preview offers a deeper look at what lies ahead for Francesca and Michaela, including their developing romance, new characters joining the ton and what showrunner Jess Brownell describes as a season filled with plenty of yearning.
What Is Bridgerton Season 5 About?
Season 5 begins two years after John’s death.
Francesca, now the widowed Countess of Kilmartin, decides to return to the marriage mart for practical reasons. Her plans become considerably more complicated when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate.
Francesca soon finds herself questioning whether to follow the pragmatic path she has chosen or explore the feelings developing between her and Michaela.
The storyline is inspired by Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked, although the Netflix adaptation made a significant change to the source material by introducing Michaela in place of the book’s Michael Stirling.
Season 5 will mark Bridgerton’s first season centered on a same-gender romance.
Brownell told Netflix that while the characters will still encounter conflict, she wants their story grounded in the romance, humor and optimism that have defined the series.
“If there’s anything really specific about this season, it is the yearning. It’s big-time yearning,” Brownell told Tudum.
She also described the upcoming episodes as a story about “queer joy” rather than queer trauma.

Dodd returns as Francesca after taking over the role beginning with Season 3, while Baduza reprises her role as Michaela, who was first introduced during the Season 3 finale.
Their relationship became considerably more complicated following John’s death in Season 4.
According to Dodd, Francesca’s grief will remain an important part of her story even as she begins opening herself to the possibility of another relationship.
Baduza, meanwhile, teased that viewers will see Michaela begin lowering the emotional barriers she has built around herself.
The two actors have also developed a close friendship away from the cameras, something both say has helped as they take over as the series’ central pairing.
Who Is Joining The Bridgerton Season 5 Cast?
Season 5 will introduce three new recurring characters to the ton.
Tega Alexander joins as Christopher Anderson, the son of Lord Anderson and a charming new eligible bachelor whose confident exterior hides his own insecurities.
Jacqueline Boatswain plays Helen Stirling, Michaela’s mother, who intends to guide her daughter through the social season with a combination of enthusiasm and tough love.
Gemma Knight Jones joins as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, an old friend of Michaela who understands the unspoken rules of London society and becomes a trusted confidante.
Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza will, of course, return as Francesca and Michaela, while members of the larger Bridgerton family are expected to remain part of the story.
When Does Bridgerton Season 5 Premiere?
Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton Season 5 will premiere sometime in 2027, although an exact release date has not yet been announced.
Production began in March 2026 and is currently underway outside London. Season 5 will consist of eight episodes.
Netflix has already renewed Bridgerton for Season 6, ensuring the series will continue beyond Francesca and Michaela’s story.
Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has also extended the overall partnership between Shondaland and Netflix under a new multiyear agreement covering television, feature films, gaming, merchandise and live events.
Bridgerton Season 5 premieres on Netflix in 2027.
