Anna Pigeon Season 1 Episode 8, “The Death Grin,” begins with a body in the river and ends with a shooting that puts someone Anna loves in danger. Between those events, Anna (Tracy Spiridakos) investigates the death of a young man looking for his family and confronts how much her own fear of loss is shaping her relationship with Jesse.
Last week’s “The Three Matt Skweikis” recap left Anna’s personal life unsettled. “The Death Grin” gives her little time to sort it out: Jesse finds Buck’s body, Frieda has a personal connection to the victim, and the case leads Anna into the carefully constructed life of a celebrated artist.
Jesse Finds Buck in the River
Jesse’s discovery of Buck’s body brings him into the investigation from the start. Frieda’s connection to Buck gives the death a more immediate human cost, too. He is someone people in the park knew and cared about, and Anna has to find out what happened while those people are grieving.
The circumstances initially raise the possibility of suicide, but Anna finds reasons to question it. Buck appears to have been paralyzed before he drowned. The condition of his body, along with the fish found near him, makes this a stranger and more troubling case than it first appears. Anna follows the evidence instead of accepting the explanation offered by the scene.
That investigation leads to Mavis, an acclaimed artist whose public story is tied to Buck’s origins. Buck had been searching for answers about his birth mother and the circumstances of his adoption. He wanted a connection to the family he had lost. Mavis understood that longing and used it.
Mavis Built Her Reputation on Someone Else’s Story
Anna discovers that Mavis’s account of Buck’s past is a lie. Buck’s birth mother was Mavis’s friend, a teenager sent away during her pregnancy who later died in childbirth. Mavis claimed that history as her own, making Buck part of an identity and an artistic legacy built on another woman’s life.
That deception gives the murder its motive. Buck was getting close to the truth, and exposing it would have destroyed the story Mavis had told him and the public. Instead of letting him learn who his mother was, she killed him to protect what she had made from the lie.
It is a particularly cruel ending for Buck because the thing he sought was so modest. He wanted to know where he came from and whether the bond Mavis offered him was real. Mavis could have given him the truth, even if it cost her reputation. She chose to preserve her legacy at the expense of his life.
Mavis eventually confesses to Anna and takes her own life. Her confession answers the central question, but it offers little comfort to those Buck leaves behind. Frieda has lost him. Buck never learns the truth from someone willing to tell it with care. The case is solved without giving its victim the connection he spent his life seeking.
Anna and Jesse Cannot Avoid the Conversation
The investigation also forces Anna to look at her relationship with Jesse. Mavis held onto someone who loved her while refusing to give him the future he wanted. Anna sees an uncomfortable resemblance in her own hesitation, even though her reasons and her choices are different.
Jesse is open about wanting a life with Anna. She cares for him, but Zach’s death still affects what she believes she can offer another person. She carries guilt over losing her husband, and getting closer to Jesse means accepting that she cannot keep either of them safe by holding back. Her recent connection with Frederick Stanton has only made an already difficult situation harder to untangle.
Jesse, meanwhile, has an opportunity in Arizona connected to his interest in geology. It matters because he has ambitions beyond his relationship with Anna. She recognizes that he deserves the chance to pursue them, even if his leaving would hurt her. For a moment, the two seem to have room to consider what they want separately and what might still be possible together.
Jesse’s Discovery Ends in a Shooting
Jesse’s work in the park takes on new importance when he discovers significant sulfuric acid in the river and signs that the surrounding land may be affected. That finding suggests a threat larger than Buck’s murder. Its source and the full extent of the contamination remain unclear.
Before Jesse can follow the discovery further, he is shot. The episode ends without establishing who fired or confirming his condition. Jeremiah is an obvious person for Anna to investigate given the unresolved tensions around him, but “The Death Grin” does not identify the shooter or prove a connection between him and the acid.
Manny’s decision to resign adds to the uncertainty facing the park. He is still struggling with Bethany’s actions, and Anna now has another crisis to confront just as the people around her are pulling away or being put in danger.
Final Verdict
“The Death Grin” gives Buck’s murder a painfully human motive while making better use of Jesse and Frieda. The case asks what happens when someone turns another person’s need for family into a story they can sell. Its ending then brings Anna’s deepest fear into the present: Jesse may be hurt, and distancing herself from him could never have prevented it.
The question of who shot Jesse is a strong lead into the next episode, but the quieter achievement here is letting him matter throughout the hour. His discovery begins the case, his ambitions complicate Anna’s choices, and his finding in the river may expose a danger the park has yet to understand.
Buck’s search for family gives the mystery its emotional force, while Jesse’s expanded role makes the final shooting land hard.
The Death Grin Ending Explained: Who Killed Buck, and Who Shot Jesse?
Mavis killed Buck. He was uncovering the truth about his birth mother, who was Mavis’s friend rather than Mavis herself. Mavis had built part of her public identity on a false account of that history. Buck’s questions threatened to expose it, so she arranged his death and allowed it to appear as though he had drowned by suicide. She later confessed to Anna and took her own life.
The episode does not reveal who shot Jesse. His discovery of sulfuric acid in the river suggests he may have found evidence of a broader threat, making the timing of the attack deeply suspicious. Jeremiah may warrant scrutiny, but his involvement is still a theory. Jesse’s condition and the shooter’s identity are left for Episode 9.
