Afterlife with Archie TV Series Officially Greenlit at Disney+ for Halloween 2027

The undead are officially headed to Riverdale.

Disney+ has greenlit a television adaptation of Afterlife with Archie, the acclaimed horror comic from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, the highly anticipated series is scheduled to premiere just in time for Halloween 2027, bringing one of Archie Comics’ darkest and most beloved stories to the screen.

Originally launched as a comic book phenomenon, Afterlife with Archie reimagined the familiar Riverdale gang in the middle of a terrifying zombie apocalypse. Now, that chilling vision is finally making the jump to live-action with many of the creative minds who helped redefine Archie for television.

What Is Afterlife with Archie About?

The series transforms the wholesome world of Riverdale into a nightmare after a supernatural spell cast by a certain teenage witch goes horribly wrong. The mistake unleashes an army of the undead, forcing Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and their friends into a desperate fight for survival.

While zombies provide plenty of horror, the story has always been just as focused on the relationships that define Archie Comics. As the apocalypse unfolds, friendships, romances, and loyalties are pushed to their limits in ways fans have never seen before.

Creative Team Reunites for a New Riverdale Story

The adaptation brings together an impressive creative lineup.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator behind both the Afterlife with Archie comic and television hits like Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, will executive produce alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Jimmy Gibbons, and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater.

The project marks another collaboration between Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti Productions, whose previous work helped build one of television’s most successful comic book universes.

Disney+ and Warner Bros. Television Celebrate the Series

Disney Kids & Family President Ayo Davis described the series as more than just another zombie story, emphasizing that the heart of Afterlife with Archie has always been the relationships between its iconic characters.

Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey called the project another exciting expansion of the Archie universe, while Aguirre-Sacasa described bringing the comic to television as a “full-circle moment” after years of seeing fans embrace the series.

Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter also shared their excitement about returning to Riverdale, thanking Disney+, Warner Bros. Television, and Archie Comics for allowing them to revisit some of their favorite characters in an entirely new way.

Meanwhile, Jon Goldwater called the adaptation a dream come true, noting that Afterlife with Archie always felt destined for live-action.

Why This Is Big News for Archie Fans

Long before Riverdale became a pop culture phenomenon, Afterlife with Archie proved there was room for bold, genre-bending stories featuring the classic characters. The comic earned widespread critical acclaim for blending horror with emotional storytelling while maintaining the spirit of Archie Comics.

With Aguirre-Sacasa once again leading the creative vision, fans can expect a faithful adaptation that embraces both the terrifying zombie action and the emotional character moments that made the comic such a standout.

If all goes according to plan, Halloween 2027 could become the perfect time to return to Riverdale—this time, with zombies.
